While there are some good answers already listed, and a lot of unnecessarily mean and judging ones, here's the simple and correct answer.
Pull your reports all 3) for free from annualcreditreport.com
You will need to enter verifying information, it is free as required by law once per year.
Go over your reports with a red pen and circle all of the negative items. Note the date they last reported to the bureaus. In my experience I have noticed that if they stopped reporting 2 years ago, they dont respond when you dispute and the item comes off, because the fair credit reporting act states that if an item is incorrect outdated or unverifiable it must be removed. Unverifiable is the loophole as the creditor has 30 days to respond to your dispute and if they fail to respond then the item is deleted from the credit file.
Anyhow, start disputing these items online (theres a link contained within the reports) a few at a time. Start with the ones who have not reported in awhile. The online dispute forms are simple and you need only check a box of the dispute reason that fits best. They will notify you by email or postal mail as to the results. If you do not get your desired deletion, keep at it, it will come off. This is the same thing that credit repair people and attorneys charge you a lot of money to do. You can do it yourself and it wont cost anything but time. Get started, keep at it and remember how important credit is in life. It can be a great tool. If you need help or have questions you can feel free to email me. |

You pay them off in full after making some type of settlement. If you make payments it might drag down your score for awhile. They then have 30 days to either take it off of your report or at least comment that it was paid in full. This will bring your score back up. |

you really can't. it's a credit "HISTORY" not a credit "FUTURE". that's what people want to see, your history. yea, you paid them off, but late, and after hassle. that's what some creditors may say, that's why they want to see the history |

Unfortunately getting bad credit is easier than getting good credit. Here's what has happened on your accounts.
I am guessing that even though you paid off the debts they were old and they had probably gone into collection or "charge-off" status. Any time a debt is charged-off it means the creditor has decided that you are not going to pay the bill so they put one last, BIG, ding on your credit called a charge-off. Then they write the bill off as a loss to them. It also means that you'll probably not get another loan or card from them for about 7 years.
Once a debt is charged off the company washes it's hands of you. Since they are no longer charging interest, and they aren't planning on reinstating your credit - they don't care about you any more! And since they pay the credit bureaus a fee to list things on someones credit they aren't about to tell the bureaus that you finally paid your bill because they don't see you as a potential customer to them any more.
There's two ways to remove these negative items.
Dispute them yourself.
Disputing an item means you write a letter to the credit bureau and prove to them with paperwork, etc. that the debt is paid in full and the negative item should be removed. They then give the creditor a chance to respond. If they do then the credit bureau makes a decision in yours or their favor. If they don't respond then after 30 days it is automatically assumed you are right and the item is removed.
The hard part? You have to dispute each item separately. That means 1 letter per item, per creditor, etc.
You can hire a credit attorney
Credit attorney's will go to work for you fighting these negative items and getting them removed on your behalf. You can read more about them and find a good one on my website here:
http://www.1-800badcredit.com/bad-credit-repair.html
The only other alternative is to try to re-establish your credit slowly and carefully.
Get one credit card and occasionally charge something, then pay it off immediately. By having a credit card with a balance available that you aren't using you show credit card companies and other lenders that you are responsible and don't run out maxing your credit. Responsibility = higher credit score.
Just be careful and don't run out getting 10 cards. Keep only 2 or 3 at most. And keep them for a while. Longevity is what companies are looking for from you. You're stable, you don't run up bills you can't pay, and you keep your cards (so you'll keep theirs and they might actually earn interest from you!). |

We all make mistakes from time to time. If there is indeed an error on your report you can get it corrected. However if you do have a spotty credit history your score will reflect it. There is hope however. There is no way to instantly boost your credit score. But improvement is possible, no matter what your credit history includes. With patience, time and tenacity, you can get the credit score you desire. I saw an article over at http://www.expectcredit.com/ that gave tips on the how to improve your score. I think it was at the bottom of the page. |

You can sign up for a service through equifax, experian or trans union. They will issue disputes on your behalf. Now - while the companies that still have you reported, for whatever reason, are legitimately allowed to do so - all you have to do is issue a 'dispute.' Once a dispuste is issued through exquifax, experian or trans union, the company that has reported you only has 30 days to repsond. If they do not respond, and many won't, then equifax, experian and trans union will remove their derogatory remark from your credit report. This has worked well for me! Good luck! |

I had some of my credit companies removed when I was buying a house. The bank talked to the credit bureas since they were suppose to be taken off after 7 years. This made my score better and I was able to buy my house with a good interest rate. Good luck |

The reality is that even though you have paid them, removing the history is not going to happen until the 7 year period is over. If the matter has been resolved, the fact that it is should help your situation. Next time you are in negotiations be sure to have the company to committ to remove the negative rating and replace it with a non rated status to help you in exchange for paying since the damage has been done. If you need more info please give me more details. |

You don't if you had an account with them. Information stays on for 7 years. |

You have the right to contact the credit bureaus and give them your side of a story where you think something is incorrect, then when some outfit contacts them to get the data on you, the credit bureau has to give your side along with the alleged bad stuff.
When you give your side, be sure to keep it brief & to the point, businesslike, with some kind of evidence. Do not reply on your sworn statements, give something like copy or receipt from company you piaid off in full where they acknowleged at the time that you were paid off in full.
All kinds of places make mistakes. They are eager to report people when there is bad info, but once the situation is resolved, it is like they forget you, so the bad info is still sitting there.
You could also write the sources of the bad info, to complain that their old story about a debt that is now paid up, is messing up your credit. Ask that at the very least they inform the credit bureaus that you have paid off your debt.
If you were behind in paying something, it is legitimate for future would be creditors to know that once upon a time you were like that. You just want to make sure that there is no info on your credit history that is inaccurate, that makes you look bad, in addition to the true stuff that makes you look bad. |
