Do you have a checking account? If so, get a gas card, those are pretty easy. Put all your gas on it and - the important part - pay it off at the end of each month. In 6 months or less you can get a Target or other chain store card. Put a few things on it, pay it off every month. After a few months of that, you'll be able to get a regular visa or mastercard. Again, pay that sucker on time. After a year, you'll have great credit. |

Good credit is a result of many factors. While most credit card and financial institutions do finetune their credit scoring formulas, in general, this is the average importance of each factor:
* 35% punctuality of payment in the past
* 30% capacity used: the ratio of current revolving debt (credit card balances, etc.) to total available revolving credit (credit limits)
* 15% length of credit history
* 10% types of credit used (installment, revolving, consumer finance)
* 10% recent search for credit and/or amount of credit obtained recently
If you have no credit (and this is different than bad credit), you can start with a fee-based credit card like the American Express Personal Card (green) or a non-fee based secure credit card from a financial institution like Providian (it's easier to get a secure card, but you often need to put down a deposit and pay higher interest rates).
Also, it's not necessarily true that paying your balance in full will help you gain good credit standing faster. You'll get there faster actually if you pay on-time, but just make the minimum balance due (or at least carry a portion of your balance to the next month). If you think about it, this is how financial institutions make money (off of your interest payments) so they actually love it when you don't pay in full. If you can show that you can still pay on-time despite carrying a balance, your credit score (or at least your credit standing with that company) will go up faster.
On a personal note, I started out with an American Express Personal Card in college when I had no credit. But, you can also try Citibank; they have a very good starter program for college students. Another option is to go with your school logo'd affinity credit card (if your college has one). |

good job so far. buy one thing on credit and make your payments on time. easiest is prob a car. But you could shoot for a low interest credit card if you think you can get it. if you go with the credit card, charge something and pay for it with your very next check. it's all about a mindset. Don't buy anything you can't afford. Also there are a large number of banks that will provide credit when purchasing from their catalog. like fingerhut only they don't exist any more.but there's lots out there. |

As long as you have a secured job and have a settled residence. You shouldn't have any problems acquiring credit.
If you don't, then I guess you need to have a secured job and a settled residence. ** Duh*** |

Apply to Household Bank. They're good, they might start you out with a secured card initially but once you have established a good payment history they will refund your deposit and give you an unsecured account. Pay your balance in full every month, and don't open too many accounts or check your credit too much. Also open a checking and savings account if you don't already have one. |

Check out Consumer Reports online or at your library. At least once a year they evaluate the credit card offerors. You want to start with a low or no annual fee, no-charge or setup fee and a company that is reliable. Start with a low card limit ($350-$500 is good), use it regularly, pay off the balance at the end of the month. Some card companies will cancel your card if you do this, but it is actually the best way, and you have to limit your charges to what you can afford to pay off.
If you have had gas, telephone or electricity service in your name, you may already have a credit history.
If you belong to a credit union, or can join one, and you need a car loan or a small personal loan, that can also help establish a credit history.
Remember, the key to good credit is to keep spending within your income and pay your bills on time.
Under federal law, you are entitled to get a free copy of your credit report from the 3 big credit reporting agencies once a year. (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax) Watch out for places that charge a fee for getting you all 3.
You can't do it fast. It's called a credit history because you have to show you can handle credit over time.
It also helps if you have a savings account with enough in it to pay 3 months' worth of living expenses. |

You will have a real hard time getting a cc from the majors. ( American Express/Discover/etc.) Your best bet is to get a store credit card, like Wal-Mart/K-Mart, etc. They are easier. Then do some shopping for a small amount of things at each. Be sure to pay the minimum bill each month in time. Thus, you will be establishing credit. It is also a good idea to have your parents (if this is ok with them) add you to one of their exhisting accounts as an additional cardholder. Tell them they can tear up the card, that you only want to be on the account in name only. Many credit bureau's will count you in with that cards credit rating.
After about 3 to 4 months, you can then apply with a major credit card line. You will be able to list your (walmart/kmart/and your parents credit card) as your credit history.
A word of advice, stay away from any credit cards with an annual fee. Also, try to get in when they are offering 0% interest for 6 months, 12 months, etcetera.
Hope this helps you. |

The previous answers are good but remember when it comes to revolving accounts it is about credit utilization. i.e. how much of your available credit line are you using.
For example, you get yourself a Shell card with a $200.00 limit. Every month you charge $200.00 and when your statement comes you pay it in full. Looks good on your credit file as far as payments go but your score will be lower because shell will be reporting that you owe them $200.00 the amount they have allowed you to charge.
Better strategy. Get the same Shell card for $200.00 but never charge more than $100.00 (50%) per month. Pay it off every month. After 6 months ask for a credit limit increase, which you will probably get. Then apply for a department store card and do the same thing.
If you want to accelerate the building of your credit file and have some extra cash, get a secured Visa/Mastercard. Wells Fargo is a good choice because their fees are very low. Treat your Wells Fargo Visa card the same way and never charge more than 50% of your credit line.
At this point 12-18 mos you should have excellent credit. Go to www.myfico.com/12 and get your real FICO scores, the ones the lenders see. If you have stable employment and good enough income you will be able to buy a new car with no-money down and maybe even a house the same way.
Good Luck |
