How do i improve my credit?
i have a very low credit score of 525. but i have payed all of my debts a year and a half ago. i recently spoke with a financial advisor for the credit union that i bank at, and she told me that i need to get some kind of credit, use it and pay it ontime to achieve a better credit score. but that credit union cannot give me any kind of credit card because of my low credit score. and i applied for a capitol one, and got denied. how can i get some kind of credit to rebuild my low score?

My suggestion for you would be to get a secured credit card. This is the easiest credit card to get because you have to place a deposit upfront which is used as collateral in order to establish a line of credit. Major banks like Citibank, Wells Fargo, USBank, and Bank of America offer these. This can also double as a springboard for an emergency fund later on once you've proven that you can pay on time. For example, if you deposit $300, then your credit limit is $300. You still would have to repay whatever you spend just like a regular card either in full or with a minimum payment. Usually after paying on time for about a year or so, the card is upgraded to a regular card and the deposit is given back to you. And you can start an emergency fund with the security deposit.

As for the debts that you've paid, if they were collection accounts, they're going to stay on your report for up to 7 years. Just paying collection accounts isn't enough for your score. Negotiating getting them removed in exchange for that payment helps the best, because the negative payment history would be gone, but since you've already paid them, there's not a whole lot that can be done at this point. One poster said that there's going to be changes in the upcoming year as far as how your score is reported, they're right to an extent. The only major change is that authorized users are no longer factored into the scoring system. Everything else still will pretty much be the same. I work with credit everyday, and I have to make decisions on whether to approve or deny credit to people. If I had a piece of advice for people trying to build or rebuild their credit, what I've said in my answer would be my advice.

I hope you're able to find what you're looking for, I wish you good luck, and I thank you for reading

Get a secured credit card. Then follow your financial advisor's advice.

Keep trying but be aware that every time you apply for credit and get turned down that goes against your credit score. Checks of your credit score are dings against it. Don't ask me why.

Your best bet is if you aren't making any major purchase soon (i.e. a car, house) not doing anything might help too. Pay your bills on time and things will change.

Get a credit report and make sure that everything is correct. Also, don't apply for too many things, it goes on your credit report. When you apply for a job, a car loan, a home loan, or other things, its on your report. Too many on your report would look bad. If something is not correct on your report, contact the company and ask for it to be removed.

Try a pay-in-advance (secured) debit card like Western Union or Eufora to establish a payment record. This may take a few months of payments to show you can do it. Then apply again for a credit card. (PS: Direct deposit of regular income to such an account would help too!)

Avoid, avoid, avoid retail store credit cards!

try store credit like spiegal or getting financed for something best buy as long as you have a checking account that is considered credit. try to get some of it removed by talking to the creditors if its not too late. If you know anyone that will cosign credit-your utilities are also on your credit report so as long as you are paying everything on time it will just take time-no quick clean your credit schemes will work.

Finance something small, that you can afford the payments on. Pay it early every month, and try topay more on the monthly payment each time. My credit was in the crapper, and I financed a truck (I know, this wasn't small), and I paid porobably $5-6,000 more for the truck just in interest... BUT! I paid it off early and in full, no late payments and my credit score jumped up! Good luck.

Get a secured credit card. Try getting a store credit card.

Don't go for big loans or accounts that would make the company vulnerable. Buy lots of very small, cheap items on credit from shops or catalogues over a period of time and pay them all off on the right due dates without ANY hickups.

Each item paid off successfully (even if it is something cheap from a catalogue) will gradually build your rating.

go to orchardbank.com. They'll give a card to the dead.

Also, If you have a Kay Jeweler in your local mall, they are real generous also. The key though is to get the cards and not use them. The closer your balance gets to the limit, the further your score drops.

The person at the bank should have known that. You don't have to use and payoff the card to build credit. Just having the card open is enough.

Also, pull your credit and make sure everything is reflected as paid. If there is anything on there that isn't, then send a letter to the bureau indicating it has been paid.

your best bet is getting a secured credit card and keep up on the payments

then about a year later get a revolving charge card (retail) and your score will slowly improve

be aware that you score won't go up quickly because it will take some time to re-establish

The person you spoke to is right...

You need to show a good payment history. Negative information could stay on your credit report for 7 or more years (it depends on the type).

Try a department store credit card. Buy something and make sure to pay it off right away. Don't wait for a statement. Sometimes they arrive late or not at all. BE SURE TO PAY it off in full.

Do this a few times and your score will go up. After a while, you'll start receiving offers from credit companies. Be patient and stay away from the ones that charge fees. Only deal with big companies, and never pay late again!! Also, it's an American habit, but NEVER buy anything you can't pay off in one month. Wait, save for it. Your credit score becomes the most important thing in your life as you get older and it can affect relationships in marriage or even dating.

First off, did you know that the FICO rules are changing in 2008? Your credit score could change without you having to do anything- though it could go either way. See the link in sources.

Second, it takes about two years for paid off accounts to stop affecting you negatively. Hold out a little longer, and make sure that there are not any other charge-offs or collection accounts you can pay off.

Um, honestly you don't need credit cards to improve your credit. That is a myth. Paying your mortgage or rent on time, bills, etc. positively effects your credit from what I'm told. In my personal opinion, the best way to improve your credit is stay far away from credit. What got you in the mess the first time? Credit? Yes. Then how is more credit going to improve the problem when that is where it all began? Credit card companies are full of crap. They are there to enslave people. And sorry sweetie, but your Financial Advisor works for a BANK. Remember who most of your major creditors were? I love how their commercials talk about freedom. Why is it so easy to get a credit card when you are in college making no income, living on student loans? Hmm? Maybe because they plan on having you graduate, get a decent job, and pay them interest for the next 30 years of your life. Who cares about a score anyways. What does that mean? Save your money, invest, and buy the things you need. If you save and invest well, there isn't anything you can't afford, and by the time you save enough to buy it, it will be a better product than had you impulse bought with a credit card a year ago, now paying twice the amount of the original price with interest. Simple concept, little understood by the American consumer in the 21st century. And it's sad, I understand the concept, yet I make money with my investments off the misinformed who are in so much debt to some of the companies I invest in. So if you want to buy into their game again, go ahead and open up credit cards making small purchases while paying the balance. Didn't you always know this? Everyone does. Just how long until an emergency comes along and the same damnable habit starts again. Trust me, common sense!
