Start out with a store card. They're usually the easiest to get. Pretty much if you can show your income, you'll get one. Also, they usually have a pretty low limit, so you can't get in too much trouble. After you've had that for awhile, maybe 6 months to a year, with no late payments, you should be able to get a MC or Visa.
A bit of advice though, after you get one or two credit cards, you'll get tons of offers, and it's very tempting. Don't do it!!! Only get one or two major cards, and be very careful how you use them. Trust me, it sucks to have huge credit card bills!

1. Credit is not free money. If you wouldn't take out hard cash to buy whatever, don't take out your card. You have to pay it back eventually, and if you don't pay all back at the first CC bill, you'll be spending more than it would have cost with straight cash.

2. You build credit by paying your bills and properly managing the "credit" you are being given by the banks and CC companies.

3. Watch out for fees!!!!!! Some credit cards have yearly fees (basically membership fees). Some have huge late fees (like for not sending in your bill on time). Some have huge interest rates after initial low rates (you're paying rent on borrowed money). Some have all of the above.

4. Do you have steady enough income to cover all of your bills?

5. CREDIT /= FREE MONEY <--- emphasis

6. Get a credit card if you're ready and RESPONSIBLE (emphasis) enough to handle your finances in a manner that can protect your entire future credit. Good credit will allow you to by houses, cars, start businesses, get loans, get more credit, and whatnot.

Start looking at a calendar and dread every pay period. Go ahead and turn yourself on to a nice habit of burning your money and holding your hands over it, appreciating the warmth of your smelly flame. Do you like that feeling? Only difference is, having a credit card won't keep your hands warm.

Don't buy what you cant afford. Just remember credit cards have to be paid back. If you have bad credit it will make your life more difficult in the long run.

Personal advice =)

If you really are determined to get a card which I would advise against.
Contact the bank you have your normal current account, they already have a relationship with you and are more likely to give you a card.
Make sure you pay the balance in full each month because your first card will have a high APR, also set up a direct debit to pay the balance for you so that you won't forget to make the payments, therefore no fees just watch the credit limit.
If the credit card has an annual fee don't go for it, its usually so you can earn extra points or bonuses each year, which at this stage you don't really need if your just trying to build up your credit score.
Its the applying for the credit card which lowers your score because the company does not report if you have been successful or not, just that you have attempted to get credit, but most companies can put two and two together if they see a search completed but no new credit, they can kind of guess you were declined

Rent something on a monthly basis to up your credit score. I advise not to get a credit card unless you can pay off the balance every month. The interest on them is high and even something you buy on sale is more than the regular price after the interest. Many people get into real debt using credit cards.♥

Credit cards are the devil! But if you must have one, please limit yourself to just one for emergencies. It is so easy to mess up your credit if you are not careful. Please understand that many companies try to entice young people to sign credit card contracts. Please read all the fine print and details. There may be fees associated with some cards, as well as high APR interest that will compound each month if you do not pay. As a rule of thumb, DO NOT CHARGE MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD TO PAY BACK EACH MONTH. This will help you build credit without building debt. Keep in mind, having large amounts of outstanding debt will lower your score. The more credit you have taken, in the form of credit cards and loans, the less you will have available. Do not apply for a bunch of cards. Do some research into what types of rates you can get before applying. It is important to have a steady income when you apply. You can also get good rates for students, or first time credit. Please be very careful. That's the most important thing.

first try applying at local businesses like a tire store or co op or something local not national and then once that shows on your file other credit will be attracted to you

prove you are responsible, know your limits don't spend what you don't have and better yet study up on how credit works possibly join a credit union

Purchase a cellphone in your name and pay the bill monthly. Open a checking / savings account in your name. Make monthly withdrawls and deposits. In time this will help you get approved.

START OFF WITH A CREDIT CARD WITH A $500.00 LIMIT ( OR LESS), DO NOT GET ANOTHER ONE ( AND OFFERS WILL POUR IN ONCE YOU GET 1 ),AND KEEP YOUR PAYMENTS UP. AS TIME GOES BY YOU WILL KNOW WHEN TO ACQUIRE ANOTHER CARD THAT YOU CAN AFFORD. BOTH BILLS MUST BE PAID ON TIME.THIS ESTABLISHED YOUR CREDIT HISTORY. remember; you must stay strong and not accept other card offers no matter what until YOU are financially ready!!! good luck !!

You can get a parent to co-sign...if that's not possible, you can do searches online for "low limit" credit cards. A lot of C.C. companies go to colleges and hand them out.
Looking at it a different way, sometimes being denied credit is a whole lot better than actually getting it......It can be very dangerous. Use it wisely.

i think you should instead of getting a credit CARD get a loan for something and before hand have a steady income and be prepared to make a payment each month,
