It is difficult now. Never used to be, I had over 6 credit cards at the age of 18, despite not even having a job, they literally threw them at you! Didn't do me any good though, and just ended up in debt.

Now, with more and more people defaulting on loans they are a lot more cautious as to who they lend do, especially at the moment in the current economic climate.

Your best bet is to get a credit card specifically for people with no credit history. The interest rates are higher as you are an unknown quantity, but it will give you a chance to build your credit rating and then you can transfer to a normal credit card later on when you have established yourself.

Although it sounds a sensible option, don't pay the full balance off each month, as this actually goes against you. The reason is simple, if you pay off the full balance, you don't pay any interest and the lender can't make any money from you. This is seen as a negative thing to lenders :-)

There are a couple of credit card companies around that should give you a card. Try Capital One, Aqua and Vanquis (in that order). Do a search in google on their names and you`ll find their sites.

Don't apply for more than 3 types of credit in the space of 6 months, if you get rejected you`ll need to wait a while before trying again. If you don't it will count against you as it makes you look desparate for money, and if thats the case the lenders will not think you can pay it back.

When you get credit, make sure you keep on top of it! With the situation with the banks at the moment, missing a single payment can cripple your credit rating for a long time, the lenders are becoming much stricter as there is currently a shortage of money to lend.

I did a credit card with Citibank where I sent them $500.00 for a CD and that became my credit limit for the card. When the CD matured I got the money back and still had the card but now I had a credit history.

A bank account into which regular payments are made (preferably from an employer) and ensuring that your name appears on the electoral register is a good start.

You need to start building your credit worthiness. The best way to do this is to apply for a secured card. Basically you put up to $500 in a savings account and they give you a card with a limit coinciding with the amount you deposit. You use it like a credit card buying a few small things each month never using over 30% of your credit line and paying in full before it is due and after a year (maybe less) you will start to get offers on better cards and should be able to get a store card. The key is to start small and use your credit responsibly and you'll earn more credit.

Good places to go for a secured card are Orchard Bank and Bank of America.

There of loads of "proffessianal rogues" ot ther advertising their wares when it comes to loan / credit.

I admire you joining the armed forces, as I did so myself.
They paid for accomodation, food, clothing, and bits & pieces.

No need for credit, but when I came out, al these silly companies would bowl over backwards to lend me money.

I didn't need a debt !
You will be OK.

try a capital one classic card, as long as you are 18 + you will probably get one with a limit of about £200/$400. but my brothers first credit card had a limit of £1000/$2000. But he never used it because he was scared of overspending and getting himself blacklisted

When I went to college, they had booths during rush week for credit card companies, the frats and clubs, even the military.
It seems that if you are a student, they want you. I was able to get a gas card my freshman year, a visa and mastercard (unsecured) by my sophomore year.
Be careful! use the cards to develop good credit, never buy anything on credit hoping to be able to pay it off, KNOW THAT YOU CAN PAY IT OFF! Keep your balance below 50% on any card you have (lenders look at that stuff to see if you have a habit of overextending your finances).

You really need to have a steady income, and a bank account that money regularly goes into! I had the same 0 credit ratings before I got a job. A good way to get positive ratings is to buy something (Not too expensive of course) which needs paying off in lump sums regularly - having things paid off successfully always gives good ratings, no-matter how small the purchase is!

Your problem is you have no credit rating which bizarely is worse than having a crap credit rating.

Get a credit card from your bank with a low limit and keep up to date with your bills. This will slowly improve your credit rating. Just use it to pay for things instead of your debit card but be sensible and spend what you can afford.

You will get a good credit rating quicker than you think.

You can check your credit rating with equifax for a couple of quid.
