Some credit unions, like a previous poster said, you actually have to be in that field of work or a relative of someone who is.
But, there are many credit unions that although they require you to be in a certain field, leave the door open for those who aren't.
For instance, I joined one credit union even though I'm not in that field of work, I enlisted in their dance class which entitled me to join the credit union. It cost me a one time fee of $25.00 to enlist. Since the credit union is in another state, I won't be participating their dance class lol.
I have all of the benefits of the credit union, low interest rates on loans, good interest rates on deposits etc. So the small fee is basically paying for itself.
You need to look at the membership requirements of the credit union you are wanting to join. You will probably have to pay a small fee and join some group/club to join the credit union. |

More and more credit unions these days have what is called a "community charter", which means that anyone living, working, attending school, and/or attending a religious institition in the cities that the credit union specifies can join the credit union. Typically its the cities and/or counties that are in the same area as the credit union. Some credit unions will put this information on their webiste. If not, just give them a call - they answer this question fairly regularly. |

As others have said, you have to be affiliated in some way. But, there are so many type of credit unions, you are almost certain to be affiliated with one. |

You can't. But that's not the whole story, because plenty of credit unions offer membership to people based on where they live, where they work, where they went to school, etc. And many other credit unions are open to the families of people who are affiliated. For example, the Navy Federal Credit Union is open to anyone who is currently in the military, who used to serve in the Navy, who is a family member of such a person, and on, and on.
So, you do have to be affiliated somehow, but often it doesn't take much to be affiliated. |

You can't "join" ANYTHING and remain unaffiliated. |

You'd need to find a credit union which is completely open to the public. It's not as common but there are some. Otherwise you can find a credit union for the city you live in, so then you don't have to be affilitated with a specific group, just living in the correct city. Also, once you're a member of a credit union you can usually remain a meber even if you move for example. |

Research the cu and see what the membership requirements are and see if u qualify through one of the ways. contact them and see if there is a loophole not mentioned through the website. or find a cu that has open membership! good luck. |

There are several credit unions that will take members from around the community, affiliated or not. Just take a look and ask. You may be surprised. |
