How do you clean up your credit?

Establish a history of making payments on time and in full. If you can demonstrate that you can pay off your debt in FULL each month, your credit will rise very quickly.

That is something that you want to work on asap, too, because the alternative (bankruptcy) is not a great experience!

Pay all bills on time and pay off all old debt. Period.

vicky
pay your bill and cancel your card.

Pay off all your old debt.
Do not incur debt that you cannot handle (cut up those old credit cards...except maybe one).
Use ONE department store card, one MC/Visa or one car loan and pay it off in FULL INSTALLMENTS (no early pay off).

Lenders like to see the full history of someone paying on time for many months. Folks sometimes think that if you pay something off early, it will look good. If you're trying to rebuild credit, letting the loan run the full length will look much better.

Good luck!!

a good idea is to request your a credit report for free through that federal program-what i have done is requested one from each of the 3 major bureaus-usually you can view them online-then dispute ANYTHING that is wrong-even if the debt is valid and the dates are wrong, or your name is wrong or you dont remember the creditor-dispute! they have to check the validity of each dispute and they have to let you know within 30 days. If they cannot verify-they have to remove it. sometimes you have to dispute more than once, but also make sure you check with all 3 bureaus to make sure each item is the same, and removed if applicable.

it might sound like a lot of work, but the reports are pretty easy to read, and easy to dispute any inaccuracies. you can change alot on your report just by making the effort.

start by paying your bills on time. consolidate if you can. dispute anything that is incorrect on your credit bureau. and don't apply for a lot of credit. hang loose for about a year before any big purchases if you can. pay on time. do not close out your credit cards. just don't use them. or at least your oldest credit card. pay on time
