You catch more bees with honey than you do with vinegar. Find out who at the college is responsible for the payment of the class. Negotiate with them to pay the debt, and then have them give you a "letter of retraction" to give the agency reporting to the credit bereaus. This will completely remove the colection from your credit once you submit it to the bereaus and your scores will increase dramatically.

Most creditors, all they want is an explanation. Running from them only makes it worse. You cant run from debt. Just call the college and explain. I bet if you get the right person on the phone you can the debt cleared, and a letter of retraction. Sell a good story--

Time is the biggest thing with credit scores. If you paid it off, then you have to check with the school ar the credit agency that they used to collect the money and find out if the notified the credit agency. Check www.annualcreditreport.com and request your free report from all three credit agencys. If it's on a report dispute it.

If you register and then drop the class, you're usually stuck with the bill.

Call or write your college and see what their withdrawal policies are. If you withdrew before the deadline then they should at least credit part of your account. If not, then you're stuck with the bill. Pay it off to get your credit back on track.

You can improve your FICO score by filing a protest with each one of the big three credit agencies. You have the right, under law, to post a 100 word explanation, plus you can challenge the negative report items. You need to contact each agency separately. The three agencies are Equifax, Transunion, and Experian. All three have websites that explain how to file corrections.

Generally, with the situation you have, only time can correct it.

You could try to make a deal of offering to pay so long as they remove it from your credit score. consider getting it in writing before settling.
