Everybody's had some good points in their answers I'll add mine. Like a couple of the posters said that the first step is to open a checking and savings account. The account alone won't build credit, but what it will do is establish a relationship with a bank, and more importantly the checking account will serve as an invaluable tool to help you build credit by paying your bills on time, especially if the bank offers online bill pay, which most if not all of the major banks offer. Also they may offer secured credit cards which allow you to put a deposit upfront in an account or even use your own savings account as collateral for a credit line. As long as you pay on time and keep the balance low, you'll get the deposit back within a year usually and either the card will convert to an unsecured card or you'll be offered a better card.
Once you get a major card secured or unsecured under you belt, then you might want to try to do the same thing but with a personal loan with your savings account as collateral. Take the proceeds from the loan and place it in a certificate of deposit and have the term slightly shorter than the loan so that you'll have no problem paying it back. In a sense you'll gain interest not just with your savings account, but the money you borrowed as well.
Usually after a year of having a major credit card, you may start receiving offers for other cards. I would be careful not to go overboard. 2 major credit cards and a department store cards should be more than enough to build credit. Keep in mind that anytime that you apply for credit, a "hard inquiury" is created which can ding you up to 5 points, regardless if you're approved or not. Credit's designed to be used when absolutely necessary. |

well if you have a bank account most banks will open you a student credit card when you turn 18. just make sure you pay back whatever is due on the card..ON TIME. and if the minumum balance due is 15 dollars always try to pay more. |

Hi, to have a good relation to your bank is very important, to have safe salary/income every week/month. Save money over a while, don`t take out more money than you have on the account etc, at least that is how it works here. Good luck, peace and love from Norway |

You actually already have credit, if you've ever had a credit card. You build up a good credit score by having good credit history - by managing your bills and payments responsibly.
FICO credit scores are based on:
Payment history - 35%
Amounts owed - 30%
Length of credit history - 15%
New credit - 10%
Types of credit used - 10%
You get one free credit report from each agency (Transunion, Equifax, and Experian) each year, so order one and look through it carefully to make sure all the information is accurate, and work hard to correct any mistakes or fix any black marks on your record.
For $8, you can get your credit score, which tells you how you rate compared to most people. |

1st you open a checking or savings acct (must be 18)
2nd you apply for a credit card - apply with capital one or chase they will give them to just about anyone
then you just use the credit card and checking account responsibly for over a year
then you can apply for something else such as a credit line at a furniture store and work your way up toward a car note, mortgage etc.
I am 21 and mine is now 740...I have been working on it since my 18th b-day. Point is as long as you pay your bills on time, keep balances low, dont go over your limit, etc ...you will build good credit |

You have to start somewhere. Its easy to get a credit card if you have a job. Just fill out an application on line |

if you have a cc and make your payments on time that establishes good credit anything in your name where you pay on time establishes good credit if you have had a job for over a year that helps with your credibility and it will help if you are interested in getting a car but the shorter the credit history the smaller the loan may be also remember too much credit is not good either even if you haven't used it ( too many credit cards) so I say stick with 1 or 2 credit cards and make your payments on time!!!!That is the most important thing |

You need a good credit score - job, not making late payments on things ie paying household bills on time. |

try and get a department store credit card or jewlery credit card they will more than likely if approved just give u a couple hundred dollar credit limit but its where u should start no car loan or bank loan |

You have to start off small to show you are reliable. and you need a good job. A credit card would work and you can get one easily but applying on line. |
