Sarah in Wonderland* | How do you get credit cards? |
I am going to be 18 soon and I would like to know how to go about getting a credit card. Can you also tell me good ones to get?
How long does it take to come in the mail? How much credit will they give me?
Thanks. |

Apply online and look for the best deals,my first one took about 7-10 days to arrive,It depends how much you earn but i do think they tend to start you off quite low maybe about £350 or something until they see that your not just paying off the interest each month,if you pay on time and more than the minimum payment then your limit should rise pretty quick. |

Really you can just apply fir any of them, but I would suggest to start out with a secured card at first. That is where you give them the money up front for your credit line. If you give them $250 then your credit line is $250. The money sits in a savings acount and you pay the balance each month. This does a great job of teaching you how to use a credit card without getting really far in debt with a high credit limit high interest rate card that can get you $1000s in debt by the time you are 19. |

I have an example.
As my daughter was turning 18, and had graduated from High School, she began getting all manner of solicitations in the mail, from car sale offers to credit cards, to life insurance, etc.
Once she got a part time job, "opened a checking account" and began college courses that mail solicitation increased.
With no record of income you may only be able to get a secured credit card, and can apply online I assume for any major ones.
Your credit history may start with your first attempt, and be recorded in a credit history, even if you get rejected.
Personally I'd advise waiting at least 10 years to even consider Credit, as a way of life. It has become a serious addiction, and a damaging plague to multiple millions of people.

id suggest not getting one. credit card companies are only out to make money. trust me. they dont have hearts and dont care about you. watch out if you get in their way of earning a buck. good luck in the world of credit cards (if youre smart youll stay out of it). |

Whatever you do, dont take out a credit card!! They are all absolute rip offs!! The interest rates go up all the time! If you do take out a credit card, dont take the insurances that they offer you either!! If ever you need to 'use' the insurance, they dont pay out!! I know this having worked in that industry!! |

You can sign up online or go to a fair on college campus. Be cautious about APR or interest rate. For some credit card companies, you are required to pay it if you don't pay off the balance. Find a good company without having to pay an interest. My strong advice to you is not to sign up, unless it's emergency or financial help. Being money wise, I cut up my cards years ago when I no longer needed 'em. |

i know a man of african origin, liberia, who wears an electronic tag, who can get u a credit card for £50 a pop. He'll make sure the sex and race of the name on the card will match your race so shop assistants won't think twice.

first you need to prove you really need one but cant afford to pay it off. then the banks will be oh so happy to let you get into debt and pay their extortionate interest rates for year after year, as your balance fractionally reduces.
if you have a job and would like one for emergencies, you probably wont get one anyways...
best get a loan from your parents... they rarely charge interest and you can often get them to forget about it..... or pay them $10 a week....
if you do decide to apply online, set up a new email address thru yahoo or other and use that, so when you start getting all sort of unwanted email, they dont clog up your main account...
good luck

applying for them is usually a good start...
then they will look at your credit history - which you dont have so they probably wont give you one
then they will look at whether you own you own house - which you dont so they probably wont give you one
then they will look to see if you have been in steady employment for at least 6 months - which if you have been to college you probably havent so they wont give you one
do you see a pattern appearing here... i wish you luck, i hope you get one, but dont be suprised if you dont |

you lie. it is that simple. it depends on your post code. your age, and your finances. alway lie about the finances. They want you to anyway, because the poor you are, the more money they will get from you in the end. Remember credit means debt. The good way to do it is have some savings, in a good interest account. Get a 0% interest card, then when they want their money pay it off. That way, they get nothing, and your own money works for you. The good ones keep changing, try logging on to the Mottley Fool Website...also, for abroad you cannot have a bette one than Nationwide. No cash conversion fee. and bank base rate, in other words. When joe soap is buying Euros over here at 1.42 and joan soap isbuying em over there at 1.44, Nationwide customers get 1.51 bank base rate. A credit card takes 8 to ten days to arrive, then you activiate it on the freephone number they give you, then you wait 5 days for your pin to come. Then, you can go out and spend all the money you do not have, and in most cases will never have, then they own you. pretty soon, you wil be up to your eyes in debt and can sit aroound at home with all those fab clothes, with no money, and no where to go, but to the rotten job you have to pay for it all. Good luck. if you have not got money, never ever get a credit card. |

Go to the Moneysupermarket and try for a good interest rate. They will start you off on a low amount of credit around £500. Ask what is the interest rate? Mine is Capital One at about 9.9% some are double that. Check the date you get your bill once you have it. Try to buy things on or just after that date. My bill is usually on the 9th of the month. So I buy something on the 9th of October - I get an interest free period up to around the 1st of December. In practice it takes time for the cash to reach them and don't be late! They charge you £20 or more for late payment. I usually pay on the 26th or there abouts. if in doubt - set up a direct debit on your bank account to pay the minimum amount - then even if your payment is late you only get caught for a little interest. Try to be responsible and you will get a better credit rating, lower interest charges and they will offer you personal loans. I've just been offered £15,000 at 5.9%. That is a good deal and means you can buy a car cash - instead of going to a dealer and getting ripped off. My car was £5k and more at a dealer - it was half that in a private sale - and it was great condition and low mileage. I bought from a guy who lived in a £300,000 house - he had it serviced regularly. So it was well looked after. It hasn't broken down yet! |

Apply online for any card, if they do not give you one ,then you will be flooded with card offers specifically designed for first time card holders. Your first credit line will depend on monthly income but probably no more than 500.00$ |
