Noahs Mom! | How do you know its a collection agency and not a fraud? |
I just got a call from a collection agency well actually they called my grandmothers house and i got the number and called back today. Its for a sprint bill from 2004 and they said they could take it to legal collections if i didn't pay for it. They said they could brake it into 2 payments but they need my bank card number and or credit card number. And they would post date the payment til i want it taken out. How do i know i can trust them with my card number? How do i have them prove its really a credit card collection agency and not just a fraud??? please help thanks so much!!!!!! |

Absolutely NEVER give them your credit card number or direct access to your bank account -- even if you are sure they are legit!! There are a lot of scam collections using antique cell phone bills.
Send them a certified, return receipt letter requesting validation of the debt to include copies of contracts and other documentation that the debt is yours. Give them 30 days to respond.
A 4 year old cell phone bill may be beyond the Statute of Limitations (SOL), the timeframe to bring lawsuit. Check your state: http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/SOL-by-State.html. A cell phone is probably considered a written account.
If it is beyond the SOL, you could sent them a cease and desist all contact. They have to stop but will probably just sell off the debt to another collection agency. You would have to send another cease and desist.
If they validate and you are satisfied that it really is your debt, you could sent them a letter offering to pay to delete. Literally say you are not acknowledging the debt but are willing to pay $x to expedite removal of the item from your credit report.
On a 4 year old cell phone, offer them 10%. They may counter offer but you should be able to settle for less than 25% with a lump sum payment. Be sure to get any settlement offer in writing and keept it, along with your payment proof, forever. DO NOT give them direct access to your bank account. |

Whatever you do, do not give your card number to anyone who just calls and asks for it. My husband had lots of prior collection accounts and after we got married (while he was in Iraq) I had to handle them all. I tell any agency asking me for money to send me, via mail, a statement or bill before I will even think about making a payment. Funny thing is, only 1 of the 4 "companies" that contacted me for collections actually sent me a bill. Another thing to do is check your credit report at least every 6 mo to once a year. If you actually are in collections with a company, it will show up on your credit report with the total amount due and the name of the agency. You can also google the toll free number and websites will come up with other ppl who have had calls from that same 800 number. They post comments on whether or not they believe the company is legitimate. Hope this helps! |

This is an excellent question and one I have wondered about myself. I refuse to give out that information over the phone and insist that they mail me a new bill, (happened to me a few months ago over an old hospital bill). You can't be too careful these days with all of the identity fraud techniques out there. |

I have had that happen...actually with someone saying they were from my credit card company.
Get the name of the company, find a phone number on your own and call them to see if they have been calling you. Rule of thumb: never give your information to someone on a phone call that you did not initiate. |

I worked Mortgage collections for the past year, and the way Sprint is going about it is the same way I would. Now, "Legal Collections" is not a term I have used, but I also don't deal with phone payments. As far as post dating payments, and spliting them up, that's something I would do. All it is, is just a small payment plan they would be putting you on. Honestly if your really skeptical about it, why not just call Sprint, and ask to speak with with collections, or billing department? |

its a scam...hope you didnt fall for it |

You could call sprint and see what collection agency has bought out the debt. |

just deal in written form, no calls. |

Call the original creditor and ask them who did they sell your account to. Or have your credit check handy, that should tell you who do you owe the money to now. |

What is the name of the collection agency?? Check out there company on the web. Do you really have an unpaid sprint bill from 2004? If you don't think the debt is valid, it could be a fraud. Ask them to send you verification of the debt through the mail. DONOT give them your bank account number until you verify that they are real and the debt is valid. Most of the time they can work out a better arrangement. You can make monthly payments of $50.00. You do not have to make lump sum payments, they don't tell you that right away because they want to get you to pay up. They should not be calling your grandmothers. that is illegal for them to contact family members. It is suspicious too. |

ask them to send you a copy of the statement in WRITING and a settlement amount BEFORE you WILL GIVE THEM A DIME. Then check them out. send a check only and make copies and once paid then send them to the credit reporting agencies as collection are very easy to get on your report but they seldom remove once paid |

The next time they call you or someone else try saying that i will pay in cash.
or just ask him for his name and his senior officer's name and then just call that agency and confirm both the name weather they are working there or not. |
