neobodyguard | How does one acheive a credit rating and or remove bad credit? |
Over the years, I have not had many debts. However it seems that the tiny amount of debt I owe seems to haunt me. I had a 300 dollar limit credit card, lost my job about a week after almost maxing it out. I was going to pay the min balance, or parts of the whole balance before my plan was destroyed.
Naturally after awhile, the interest accumulated resulting in higher amounts owed still not having a job. It has been approximately 6 years since this has passed. The statute of limitations in my state for collections is 4years. So I should not have to pay in any way shape or form.
However, I do not understand what is keeping me from being approved for credit. I now make much higher pay, have a savings account. No current debts other than the mentioned and possilbly one other in which I am pursuing.
What actions can I take in order to mend my poor credit situation? |

You can use credit repair agency to fix your credit - for example this one - http://freecreditreport.deep-ice.com - They can clean lots of bad stuff from your credit report - and do it much faster than yourself, so your credit will go up fast. |

You need to start by paying off those debts. You mention two, and that's enough to hurt your credit. After that, just make sure you pay off credit cards and loans right away. |

Not impossible. If you haven't already get a secured credit card (Capital One is a good choice www.capitalone.com)
Get a card for say $500-1000. Charge the card every month for a maximum of 10% of the limit , no more to keep your usage low. Pay the FULL balance on TIME every month for the full 6 months and your score will start going up.
If you have any other card or loans....make sure they are current and the balances paid down as low as possible, preferably zero.
Get a copy of your credit report and dispute any items older than 7 years (statue of limitations). If there are legitimated debts, contact the creditor/collection agency and ask for a 'pay for delete' get it in WRITING. |

You should pay the debt as soon as possible. Letting it linger for so long has surely had a very bad effect on your credit, and the sooner you pay it off, the better. Don't wait for the state to bail you out: the company trying to get your money is much smarter than you. They know all the loopholes in debt collection laws and if they're still pursuing you, you can bet they're doing it legally.
If you still owe that company money, that's why you aren't being approved for credit. You say that you're making more money, have some saved up. If this is the case, there's nothing stopping you from paying aside from your own stubbornness.
To improve your credit situation:
Pay of all debt completely.
Get a low-limit credit card with the lowest interest you can find (since you're obviously not good at handling money).
Spend a very small amount on the card every month (charge coffee or one fill-up of gas or something that you know for certain you can pay off in full every month)
Don't let debt pile up on you. If you can't pay back the card in full one month, then cut it up or leave it at home and don't use it until you pay it back completely. |

I'm not following, you shouldn't have to pay because the statute of limitations has run out? You're wrong, there is no state where if enough time goes by you don't have to pay your debts. It will haunt you the rest of your life until you pay it off. Why in the world would you think you don't have to pay because a certain amount of time has went by? Pay your debts. |

it is probably time to get the experts in. get in touch with a credit repair consultant and explain your situation to them - ask them what they can do to help.
Here is a review site for the best ones:

Pay your old debt. The statute of limitations for collections may have expired, but you're still gonna have a "bad name" until you take care of that outstanding debt... |

Request the credit bureau remove it from your report, since the statute has run. |
