Pay any existing debt down or off, and pay them on time. This will raise your score although it will take a few months after this for it to appear on your score. |

Really the only way to raise your credit score, is to show that you can manage your credit. As for the credit card situation, just get one cc and pay it off each month. You don't have to put 75.00 on it, just 25 here and 30 there. Then each month faithfully pay it off. This will help your credit score, also pay off old debt and check out your credit report. Make sure there is nothing on there that is hurting your credit score. |

Do not waste your time on checking your credit report at any other site than annualcreditreport.com
This is the site the government recommends, and there are no scams. Once you get the free report, you can go back to that site and purchase more through out the year.
In the links below, I have included a handy little score simulator calculator. Play around with it and it will show you what you need to do to bump up your score.
It's pretty darn accurate too.
If you have negatives on your reports, the further down the road you are from them, the less important they become on your score. However, you will need to be establishing good credit in the mean time.
Check out secured credit cards. You don't need a huge credit line. You just need to make payments every time on time.
GET EDUCATED!! It's our responsibility to educate ourselves on our finances. I have included a couple links to help you with this. One is a message board, the other is FICO's credit education site.
Be diligent and you will be rewarded with a good score. |

paying off your old debt will help . I would highly recommend doing that before obtaining more debt |

The best thing you can do is pay off all of your credit cards as soon as possible (utilize some form of debt consolidation if necessary), and stop using them, or pay them off in full at the end of every month. That last part bears repeating: pay them off IN FULL at the end of every month.
Taking out more loans tends to decrease your credit score, at least in the short to mid-term, I believe. However, having a larger amount of unused credit available (say, by having a credit card, but keeping your balance at or near zero), over time increases your credit score.
Credit cards are great, but you have to use them responsibly. Don't use them to buy things you can't afford, use them like a checking account for everyday/normal purchases. (For major purchases, wait until your credit score is better and shop around for a loan.) They are better than debit cards, because they are more secure, sometimes offer rewards and allow you to build credit. Also it gives you a little lee way in case your check isn't processed quickly (with credit cards, you typically have at least a 20 day grace period during which you can pay off your purchases, but don't push it). Generally, being charged a little bit of interest is better than getting hit with an overdraft charge. |

Prepaid debit cards are you best bet for something like this. Check out http://www.gozeropercent.com under the prepaid debit section |

Credit is purchased.
You purchase it by paying interest on loans.
If you won't pay interest, don't bother with personal credit, you'll never have it.
If you ARE willing to pay some interest to get credit, then you can pay only 4.9% if you just borrow money to hold on deposit, hold it there while you make some interest payments, then give it back to the lender. You can do this with no credit check at creditloader dot com |
