As previously stated, debt collectors can continue to try and collect for as long as they want.
However, each state has a statute of limitations, where after this date has passed, you no longer have a legal obligation to pay the debt. They can no longer sue you or take any action. But the can still call and harrass you.
You can stop the harrassment by sending the creditor a cease and desist demand, in accordance with the Fair Debt Collections Act.
The debt can be reported on your credit reports for only 7 years (beginning on the date of default). |

IT DEPENDS ON YOUR STATES LAWS. THE STATUE CAN BE ANYWHERE FROM 3 TO 7 YEARS ON OPEN ACTIVE ACCOUNTS. IF THE ACCOUNT WAS SUED AND A JUDGMENT OBTAINED THEN THEY CAN HAVE OVER 30 YEARS TO COLLECT.
THE STATUTE ONLY STAYS LEGAL ACTION, THEY CAN CONTINUE TO COLLECT EVEN AFTER THE STATUTE RUNS OUT, THEY JUST CAN'T SUE YOU ON IT. |

Usually they would keep collecting until all debt that has been filed on individual is pad of completely. If that person dies before they can pay it off they'll go to the next closes relative. |

Debt collectors are utter scums of the Earth. They all deserve to be savagely beaten to the brink of death. I’ll volunteer, personally.
That being said, I’m not certain on exact dates on collection, but if you want a third party collection agency to leave you alone, FedEx a cease and desist letter telling them they no longer have permission to contact you.
From that point, they can only contact you to inform you of their future intentions, no more.
It is true, they may resale your debt to another scum bag, worthless collection agency, in which case you do the same thing again.

Debt collectors are the lowest of the low. They are the lowest of the low. They will keep trying to collect. Even if one debt collector gives up, another will get in. There are a lot of debts that should not be collected by debt Collectors like those that have been written off by bankruptcy courts. It would be a Contempt of the Courts for any Debt Collector to attempt to collect debts that have been written off. But the debt Collectors will try to collect even a debt that has beeb written off. There are some debts that should not be collected because the creditors have waived the right to those debts becuse of their earlier law suit that they withdrew. The debt collectors would even try to collect such waived debt because they don't really look into the history of any debt. |
