How long do we need to keep all the bank statements/utility bills/credit card statements etc.?
Recently i was shredding away loads of papers and didnt know what to do with these tho.And they occupy hell a lot of space and weight.Pls advice

Utility bills should be kept no longer than 6 months. I usually keep 3 months worth before throwing them out.
Credit card and bank statements should be kept for 1-2 years. I usually just do one year....since you can always request statements from your bank if you need them for some reason.
If you have a business, then you should keep credit/bank statements for 3 years.

susana
you can request copy bank statements up to six years old so destroy them as soon as you have read them

I used to work for a wee family run business and they were told that for tax purposes, they had to keep everything for three years, I imagine it's different for personal stuff. Probably between six months to a year.

six months is sufficient as when you go to open an account as go somewhere that needs proof, you can use proof six months max

I only keep a couple of months worth at a time.
I shred the rest.
If you need copies at a later date, you can ask the bank or credit card companies and they will send them out.
I think its best not to have these things lying around!!

It is only business receipts and paperwork if you are self employed that you need to keep for 6 years.

In Ireland, we are told six years. It is very likely similar everywhere.
