How long does credit inquries stay on your report or affect your report Thank-you?

I was thinking that inquires only stay on for 2 years. I had inquiries in the past (at least 2 yrs ago) that are no longer on my credit report. Inquiries only start effecting your credit if you have more than 4 I think. My Realtor told my husband and I when we were buying our house that for a home loan you could have more inquires than the allotted amount before affecting your credit score.

Credit Guru
First off, there are 2 type of inquiries.

1) Ones initiated to review your existing accounts (Account Review), to pull your own credit file for review, for insurance underwriting and for promotion (junk mail from creditors). The credit industry calls this a "soft pull”. These all stay on your credit files for 2 years and HAVE NO EFFECT on your FICO credit score. When you review your credit reports they will appear under the section "Inquiries only seen by you"

2) Ones where you have sought new credit. The credit industry calls this a "hard pull". Credit cards each count as one inquiry. For Car loans and Mortgages you have a 14 day window where you can "rate shop". All of the inquiries within that window will only count as one inquiry as far as your FICO credit score is concerned. These inquiries will remain on your credit files for 2 years. Your FICO credit score is only affected by inquiries in the last 12 months. Every time you have one of these inquiries it may lower your FICO credit score.

Policies vary somewhat among the different credit reporting agencies. Generally speaking inquiries remain for 3 years. Most lenders ignore inquiries that are over 6 months old. The assumption is if a loan was granted based on the inquiry it would be evident on the report. Be careful though, if a lender sees a large number of credit inquiries they may consider you a chronic credit seeker and will be less likely to advance more credit.

They will stay on your credit report for 2 years.

Inquiries are a pain in the ***. You apply for one loan and you may get 30 inquiries without your approval! This can knock your rating for a loop if it is marginal. These inquiries stay on the report for about one year, then are dropped. So, limit any loans you want to make, be very sure you need the credit, and use credit very wisely starting now. IF you do not need credit, then do not use it. DO not fall for the Home Depot crap about a free tool if you get one of their credit cards....everyone is pushing their own credit cards, and each time you fall for it, at least one inquiry goes on the report...not worth the mess you can get into. IF you are going to purchase a car, go to YOUR bank, explain your credit history, ask if they will give you a loan. IF they think there is a chance, there will be only ONE inquiry. IF you let a dealer do the financing, they will shotgun the app out to 10 or more creditors to see who will give the best rate and what their best profit will be on a loan...never let a dealer apply for credit in your name...the mess it makes of your credit report will last a year. Take it from me who has learned the hard way. I saw my credit ratine drop 40 points in two months when I purchase 2 cars this way...never again.!!! It is now back up, and I am very conscience of the impact this kind of nonsense makes.

I am not 100% sure on this one but I think 7 years.

if u have something going towards your credit that'll make it bad, then your screwed until u pay it off

$0.02
soft inquiries take one point off your credit score. You get the point back after 30 days.

chris_p26
6 years, but you can dispute any quieries you have with the credit record holder if you know something is making your report worse when it shouldnt be, but you´ll need financial records to prove it.

Credit inquiries stay on your credit report for two years. Each inquiry you make will appear for the two year period from when the credit report was pulled. Each inquiry has a negative impact on your score. If you are looking to buy a house or car, do not have them pull any credit information until you are sure you want to buy. The agencies feel that this activity is your "willingness" to acquire more credit. Which to them is a bad thing.
