How long does it take for the record to be off the credit report, if the debt is settled with collector?
i have a 1400 in cc debt for the last 3 years, the collection company offered the settlement of 715.51. The actual credit line was 500. the rest are fees. Does anyone know, how to negotiate lesser "pay off" amount, and if i pay how long would it take for them to take it off my credit? would that improve my score?
thank you

Derogatory items age off your credit report 7-1/2 years from the date of first deficiency -- whether you pay them off or not. Paying off old debt will not improve your score. The damage is already done.

In fact, it could actually lower your score initially. The older an item, the less impact on your score. Paying old debt makes the transaction current and it counts more in your score calculation.

However, creditors look at more than your score. They look at your whole credit report. Paid old debt looks a lot better than unpaid.

Since this debt is over 3 years old, make them a lump sum counter offer of 25%. Collection agencies don't want payment plans. If you have to spread the payment out over several months, you'll have to pay more. Get any settlement agreement in writing and keep it, along with your payment proof, forever. Do not give the collector direct access to your bank account.

Seven Years... It sucks!

Negotiate for a pay to delete and that can be done for less than the amount due. They purchase the debt for penny's on the dollar so you can most likely settle for about 50% Of the amount. Remember it has to be in writing

If you pay it off you won't get sued.

You did not say where you are eg UK or US so cant say for sure but if you are in UK 6 years Yes Not paying is an option to think about look into all the pros and cons of paying or not and do what is best for you

Any payment would improve your credit rating. It will stay on your credit file for 6 years.

It is better to have resolved debt than unresolved debt. It will stay on there for 7 years though. Take the 715.51 and pay it of like 100 a month plan or something. 2 months after it is fully paid off you should contact them one last time and make sure that account is resolved/closed then check your credit scores to make sure it reflects those payments. Half the time they leave it on your credit report. I'm not sure why they do this it seems to me they just like being a** holes. Then you have to contact the credit bureau and dispute the debt. They will do some investigating that will take 45 days then it will show as resolved/closed. I have had to do this many times and is a huge pain but needs to be done.

If you pay it off It hardly hurts your credit score. But It still does have a slight negative effect. They keep track of every month that the account was delinquent. When paid, it won't show up as a negative account and there will be 0.0$ in the debt owed and your credit score will go up. If not paid, it will show up as 1 negative account and debt owed is 1400$ and your credit score will suffer.
