All accounts in good standing stay on for 10 years after being close (for example if you pay off a car loan it will stay on for 10 years). All bad things like charge offs and late payments stay on for 7 years. Tax Liens will stay on until paid and for 10 years until satisfied. |

Once the debt has been cleared up, then it will take 7 to 10 years to fall off of your report. If you still owe the money, it can continue to be reported as past due until the bill is paid in full. |

As far as how long these things effect your credit, I think it is 7 years, but the last 2 credit reports I requested showed things from 20 years ago! I couldn't believe that stuff was still there. Thank goodness it was all good, but it was still a little surprising. |
