Da Austrian Oak | How long should I keep my credit card statements including cards that I've cancelled?? |
I'm trying to get rid of a lot of clutter in terms of old receipts, etc., but I don't know what to do w/ all my credit cards' statements. I keep them in a file drawer labeled per credit card, but how long should I keep them or how far back should I keep them?? |

You should keep your credit card statements, checking/saving account statements and receipts for 7 years. If you should ever get audited by the IRS, and I hope you don't, you'll want and need these. For utility bills and phone bills, once you've received the most recent bill, and you don't have any issues regarding it, you can get rid of (preferably shred) the old bills. |

Keeping them back to January of the previous year should be enough, unless you purchased anything business-related with them, in which case you'll need to keep the relevant statements for 10 years. |

They say 3 years minimum; 6 years better. But if you get statements electronically you can keep them forever without clutter. And you never know: a dispute can come out of nowhere. |

If you can scan them and save them on your computer, then toss the ones that are more than a year old. |

oh yes, that's a very good one... I'm having the same question and it's not just over credit card statements.. it's every car payment, utilities payment etc. never mind the 3 year limit.. you never know what bright idea may dawn on them next.. and even if they had issued a statement that your account is debt free.. they can always claim it was an error on their part.. keep all your receipts dude, however ludicrous or a drag that may seem at times to each and every one of us .. |

business credit card statements, 7 years, or until the balance is paid off, whichever comes later.
personal credit card statements, until that balance is paid off.
since it is not income, it doesnt matter for personal expenses.
Unless you wrote something off on your taxes that is on your statement, and in that case it is 7 years. |

What is the rule in the event you are ever audited by the IRS? Is it 3 years? My husband thinks it's seven. I think that's the best rule to go by. Maybe somebody knows?? |

Best is to keep the last statement so that you can check up with the next statement if the new statement is correct then tear up the old one and keep the new one to check the next statement by this u cannot go wrong and saves you the headache of saving in numerous statements |
