How many bad checks before going to jail?
bad check writing

answer annie
Usually just a few. It's called theft.

pinkchik020
it depends i think.
you can go to jail the first time you get caught.
it depends on the store and the amount.

It depends on who you wrote a bad check to
If they what to press charges or not

Depends on the state and amount and your record. In MN it's not a felony till $500 unless they aren't your checks then the forgery is a felony. If you have no record and do $500 you may still not go to jail just be put on probation. I would google the laws in your state to make sure.

HOW ABOUT YOU JUST DON'T WRITE THEM!

It's based on the total amount that constitiutes a "felony".
Some cases it's $50.00 or more.

If you knew it was a bad check when you wrote it, ONE bad check is enough. If you just can't manage your checking account, most places will just charge you a fee and let you make good. If you bounce a lot of checks, no one will accept them anymore.

Depends on the state you are in. If you are in Alabama it is ONE bad check and you go to jail. Arkansas allows 1, and on the second you go to jail. I don't know about other states.

Depends on where you live and past criminal activity(if any);South Carolina has one of the toughest bad check writing laws in the country.Write a bad check here, and you might as well
tell your family "goodbye" for at LEAST 90 days(first offense)

Wizzard2
Its not even the State, its the Town or County. Some place they dont bother, others the sheriff come if you pass a bad checkin the 7-11.

Wurm™
You will not go to jail for this. Do not believe the naysayers. It is perfectly legal to write as many as you want.

thy1
Oh, that totally depends on where you live. Here in my place, it doesn't matter.

States have different laws, but when you write a bad check, they'll send you letter after letter giving you a chance to pay it. If you continue to ignore it, then they can charge you with theft or fraud....whatever it's considered. That's the way it is here in TN anyway.
