zoedriskill | How many years can a creditor come after someone to pay? |

Depends on the state, but in reality they can come after you forever if they don't let the lone go into default. |

They can come after you forever if they wanted to. But depending on where you live, your statute of limitations (SOL) give a time until they can sue you for your debt. For instance, VT (where I live) the SOL is 6 years. After my 6 years is up, they can no longer sue me and after 7 years it comes off your credit report anyway. You can always send them a "Cease and Desist" letter after the SOL and they LEGALLY have to stop harassing you. |

States have different status covering debt. Generally is 5 to 7 years, but it is basically counted not from the date you made your last payment but when was the last intent to collect and then no more collections that the years start counting. |

THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS VARIES FROM STATE TO STATE. IT RUNS FROM EITHER THE DATE OF LAST CHARGE OR THE DATE OF LAST PAYMENT, WHICH EVER WILL GIVE THEM THE MOST TIME. IF YOU GET SUED, THEN THEY CAN LEGALLY COME AFTER YOU UNTIL THE JUDGMENT EXPIRES, WHICH IN SOME STATES CAN BE OVER 30 YEARS. IF IT IS A JUDGMENT, IT WILL STAY ON YOUR CREDIT UNTIL IT IS SATISFIED OR EXPIRED, YOU CAN'T BUY A CAR OF A HOME WITHOUT PAYING THE JUDGMENT OFF.
EVEN AFTER THE STATUTE EXPIRES THE CREDITOR CAN STILL ACTIVELY COLLECT THE DEBT, THEY JUST CAN SUE YOU.
ALSO THE STATUES CAN "STAY" IF YOU LEAVE THE STATE AND RETURN (IN SOME CASES) OR IF YOU FILE FOR BANKRUPTCY AND IT IS DISMISSED.
GOOD LUCK |

Pretty much forever! |

I believe the limit is five years, but there is a trick to that, something to do with the date it is filed. |

They can come after you till it is paid. They can only report it to the bureaus 7 years after the last transaction on the account but a debt remains valid until it is paid. I have worked for a company that bought 20 year old debt and some people actually do pay, they recognize the account and state yes that was mine and some do and some don't but they can come after you as long as that paper igsist that you owe something to someone. |

If you really want your debt to go away, and you can't pay it down, you need to file for bankruptcy. Then the creditors have to leave you alone, and they can't sell your file to someone else. Otherwise, they will NEVER leave you alone. |

I've heard 7 years, but the catch is, they can sell the debt to a collection agency & it is considered a new debt. This can pretty much go on indefinatly. |

7 years is how long the derogatory info stays on your credit report.. then it would be deleted.. and good bye creditors |
