First time mom! | How much of a balance should I keep on my credit card? |
I know that I should keep some balance on my credit card to help show that I can make regular payments. I really want my credit score to go up even more, so does anyone know what percentage of balance should I keep on my credit card to help my credit the most?
thanks :) |

Thats a tough one. I don't believe in keeping any balance on credit cards because the interest is too high. A better way(and cheaper way) to build credit would be a car loan. Best would be a mortgage.
If you do keep credit cards (I have 3), and pay them off each month before you accumulate any interest, that will also reflect positive on your credit history. |

Zero. Your score goes up even higher if you pay everything off each month. |

it doesnt matter aslong as you keep a balance on it untill your credit score is where you want it to be. if you pay it off every month it will do nothing for your credit score. |

RIDE ABOUT 500.00 BUT SHOW IT PAID OFF TOO.
0 IS THE BEST BALANCE FOR YOU AND THEM. |

To keep your credit really good, pay it off every month.
Next best: Keep 3/4 of it clear most of the time.
If you can't, 1/2 is the next best. |

You want to have maybe a $100 balance, and just keep making payments on it.
Those who said to pay it off every month, this is good to maintain good credit, but to build it, that's actually bad. When companies check your credit, they're also seeing if you make consistant payments on a balance. If you pay the credit card off every month, it doesn't show that you are making payments. The balance would show up as $0.
Example:
The purpose of this, say you buy a car. A bank looks at your credit. Your Visa card shows $0 balance, but all payments are made on time. It doesn't prove anything on recent transactions and balances. It won't say when you're last payment was, for all they know, the last time you paid that balance could have been three years ago, when you first opened the account.
Your mastercard shows $100, making payments on time. That's where it helps you. With the car, you're obviously not going to pay it off at the end of the month, you're going to need to make payments.
Paying off a credit card every month is a SMART thing to do, but in terms of building it, it's not the best plan. My source? Experience, and a lot of reading of financial stuff online and talking with banks and such. |

You can spend using the credit card every month and pay off every month. Shows that you pay as agreed with you paying zero interest. The only way to use a credit card effectively. |

Keeping a balance on your credit card doesn't help your credit score. You should pay your credit card off every month to avoid finance charges. If you want to increase your credit score by making regular payments, some banks or credit unions will let you take out a six month loan and set up direct payment. That way, your payments will be made automatically for you, and you can build some credit that way. Otherwise, just be financially responsible. |
