How old do you have to be to get a credit card? see details.?
Okay so i know about prepaid cards and stuff, example the Visa Buxx card for teens. But i'm talking about a real credit card. How old would i have to be to get a credit card for a store, like a hollister credit card? or just a credit card in general? and what about debit cards? how old for those?
thanks.

I believe 18, but if I were to give any advice to anyone it would be to never get a credit card. Credit card dept has made my life horrible for a few years. It starts with your going to use it for emergency's or pay it off right away, but before you know it its maxed out and your having a hard time making payments. If you loose a job, your screwed.

avoid credit cards, if you only learn one thing in life learn that.

To be the only Account Signer on a checking account, credit card, car loan, mortgage, etc. you have to be 18 because under 18 you are considered a minor and not able to enter into legal agreements by yourself.

If you have a parent that will help you set up a checking account with a debit card that would be the first place to start. Your parent can also add you as an "authorized user" on their credit card so it will report on your credit file also. That is good if your parents are responsible with their credit cards but bad if they aren't.

When you turn 18 you can start with a secured card. I would start out with a Bank of America or Wells Fargo secured Visa card. Both banks have great programs with low annual fees, low starting amounts ($300.00) and no junk fees. After 12 months of positive on time payments you will graduate to an unsecured status. Then you will probably be approved for other cards such as dept. store and gas cards.

Good Luck

I have to say 18 for an actual credit card. This is due to the fact that the creditors, or the companies issuing the cards, expect to have a responsible adult for a cardholder.

something
My guess is 18, unless you get a gullible parent/legal guardian to add your name to an account. You'd get a card with your name on it.

I was 18 when I got my first card. It was a Capital One student card with a $300 limit. It was hard to get too. I applied for a couple and got shot down. Nowadays, I can't get those companies to stop bugging. I get offers left & right. BTW, I'm 22 now. Also, I don't think you should get a store card. The interest rates are so whack. It's really not worth it. I would know, I have a lot of them. As for debit cards, as long as you have a checking account, I think you can get it with a debit/atm card.

You can get a debit card at any age as long as you have a checking/savings account. (your parent must co-sign on the account though)

A credit card? You can be offered one at any age, but I don't think you can ACTUALLY HAVE ONE until you're 18.

I work at the bank, so that's where I'm getting this knowledge. You must be 18 years old in order to get a credit card. WHY? Because, as a minor, there are a lot of situations in which you would not be liable for issues on the account. The charges could even be disputed once the minor reaches 18 years of age. Liability and having a credit card go hand in hand, and that is why you must be at least 18 in order to get a credit card.

I think you can get a visa debit card with your parents co-signing. And as for a real credit card. You have to be 18. Also with the Hollister etc.. I would look for getting a Visa, Mastercard, discover over a retail card. Shop online for the best interest rate. But if you don't have any credit your probably going to get a pretty crappy interest rate. Take it, then when you get established you'll start getting offers in the mail for 0% transfer and blah blah blah. Transfer your balance on your high interest onto your lower interest cards. I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure it is the quickest way to establish credit. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS pay your payments on time. Even if it's only the minimum. Credit cards are also the quickest ways to ruin your credit. I always pay my credit cards first, over house, car etc.... However I just got them all paid off. Woo Hoo. But they have helped us out credit wise and emergency wise. They can be your best friend or your worse enemy. Be smart and happy shopping.

It doesn't matter your age if your parents get you one but otherwise i think you must be eighteen and you must have a steady job.i got my first credit card when i was 21 and working for about 5 months at J. M.schneiders.
