pam28 | How should i deal with my debt? |
im currently with Scottish power for my gas and elec, and have been unable to keep up with the payments so have a debt of £915 with them(wont bore u with the details). They have now passed me on to the debt collectors scotscall
i contacted scotcall, and expalined to them that i have severe financial difficulties but would be able to make a payment towards the debt in January,
i contacted them at the beginning of the month and made asked how to make a payment, a payment offer of £500 with an additional payments of £50 untill April, this would be in addition to my monthly payment of £147.
they were not interested in the part payment but informed me that they had applied for a warrant of execution and would action it on feb 8th to disconnect the supply and install a payment meter
i dont know what to do for the best
should i apply to the courts to suspend the warrant and continue to my payment offer
or should i let them install the prepayment meter and pay the debt offf in smaller amounts
Or should I make a payment to Scottish power directly, I am not to keen on speaking to them thought as the last time they were “off” with me.
i hold my hands up and say that i did deal with the whole situation badly by burying my head in the sand, is been a very hard, upsetting few months- but is it too late for me to try and sort it out
i would be grateful for any advice you can give me |

the easiest way would be to install a pre payment meter and that way you do not get another bill and you reduce your existing bill each time you put credit on your meter |

Hi
I found myself in a similar situation a year or 2 ago and it is upsetting when you try to put things right and are met with 'business answers'.
Scottish Power have sold the debt to Scotcall so will probably not be able to help - even if they did accept a payment, you would still have Scotcall at your heels.
In order to get yourself out of debt, pay as much as you can afford at the end of January, but still let them go ahead and install the meter. It will work out slightly more expensive in the long run so you will have to learn to budget poperly, but at least the debt can't get worse.
Once you have a meter installed, my advice to you would be to whack a load of credit on at the beginning of each month when you get paid. Overdo it the first month so you don't fall short before you get paid again.
Things will work themselves out. If you are anywhere in the UK except Scotland, you can call Debt Free Direct for advice and they will be able to give you the legal standings - I would advise this anyway if you are in debt with other companies too.
And don't beat yourself up about it. S**t happens and you are taking control of your life now and you will learn a valuable lesson from it.
Good luck! |

Hi, firstly sorry for the worry this has I bet caused you, money woes are just soul destroying and awful..
Get in touch with the National Debt Helpline - they are fantastic and will give you all your options and are very friendly and great to talk to..
Good luck - I am sure you are doing your best and it is just indicative of the times we live in that you should be struggling to pay such a basic need and not a reflection on you at all. |

you will get better advice from citizens advice (they have debt advisors) than you will from anyone here. |

Pam..in the scheme of things your debt is insignificant..please don't worry...you should talk again to Scottish power and explain your position...clearly and concisely...then let them give you your options.....get the name of the person you talk to at the beginning of the conversation and then ask to speak to the supervisor/manager if the call turns nasty...good luck.. |

no one has a clue how to deal with debt until the people go through it there selves. i was £30,000 in bebt frightened to answer the phone wondering weather i would come home and my house still be there.
1st hit the probroblem head on, work out all your income, even the creditors that you think have been forgott.
write to them do not ring. do not give them your telephone number. if a creditor rings you or comes to your door it is a form of harasment, and is illegale in england.
2nd you are protected by the consumer credit act.
3rd creditors want there money yesterday.
4th to get out of debt priorites. that means food bill areas in that order.
5th whilst dealing with creditors say you do not work you get half of what you realy get, they never check. due to data protection they can only go of your word.
6th they can not take anything on h.p like a car with outstanding finance on it. however the finance company can appliy for a compulsery purchas order throught the corts, if you can proove you need the car they can not take this off you.
7th all catalogues will accept £5.
8th debt under £5,000 will accept 10% of the outstanding balance as long as you entre an arragement to pay.
ccj stay on you credit file for 6 years and then they are wipped away however your credit never is the same.
if you have fallen ito arreas council tax you can start paying this years tax and come into a volentry arrangements with the bayliffs, the bayliffs will onley come round if you ignore there letters.
if you are unemployed you can declaire yourselfe bankcrupt, but i would never recomend this.
i ran up my debt by taking loans to pay of debt, and credit cards. i even cashed £3,000 of cheques from the bank.
i mooved and changed my name.
i got a letter from the bank threting to make me bancrupt. it was then i realised its time to wake up to my creditors and stop running.
i did a v.r volintory arrangement, some creditors accepted straite away. some refused and to thoughs i thretend to sue them for incured intrest and take them to cort .
after 12 months i was finacley better off my health was a lot better.
i finley got invited in to the bank were they offered me a concilidation loan as i had kept to my payments.
i paid all my creditors and areeas off still had £500 for my self ., and instead of paying £900 a month back to seperate creditors i payed £115.00 for 14 years i was able to concentrate more got promotion and now earning loads.
this is a true story you do not know untill you done it . i did it and i got out of it .
you can to. and i wish you all the luck in the world, if you want any more information, just e-mail me and i will give you more sound advise.
hope this has helped you. +++++++++++++++++ |

Scottish power are just shite. For 2 years they underestimated my bills, even though i gave them correct meter readings twice. Then i was landed with a bill bigger than yours. They tried the same thing, and i told them to come and fit a prepayment meter, which they did a month later. They wanted to set it at 36 pounds a week extra and i told them I couldn't afford it, so they halved it. The bill will be paid off in another 10 weeks at which point i will be switching immediately to edf, where it has been calculated that I will be saving 500 pounds a year if i have both gas and electric from them which makes me wonder why Scottish power are so expensive.
If i were you, i would ask them to fit a meter, and you can then pay the thieving tossers off at a rate you can afford. |

Why does it matter if you are i debt, as long as you have everythnig you need, food and a place to live debt means nothing, money really means nothing at all, you will only be in debt till you die anyway. Live life and dont worrie about it, as long as your current bills are paid nothing matter. |

I don't understand why you didn't arrange a payment plan with your electricity and gas supplier befor they called in the debt collectors. In most instances gas/electricity suppliers will allow you to pay smaller payments back if you explain early on that you are having difficulties. |
