How the hell to pay a $17500 credit card debt?
I've really overspent my credit cards for the last two years. I've purchased nothing valuable, and to be honest I don't even know where the money went. I make $12 an hour and try to pay minimum payment, which by the way is $380 a month. At this rate I will never pay these credit cards. This is really depressing! Do you guys think a bankruptcy is the way out?

I was in the same exact boat as you. I had 35,000 debt and only made $13 an hour at the time.
i can't believe i only have 5,000 left to pay off. only after 2 years.

I was so close to file for bankruptcy, i just had to pay the lawyer. then i decided not to. it was a very good decision for me not to. even though every situation is different.

I called a credit counselor (MMI).
worked a second job.
fixed my expenses
i got raises, i earn $20 now

i couldn't be happier with my accomplishment. I thought, if i can do it, any body can do it.

my friend, the best thing to do is go into credit counseling. you will no longer be able to use your credit cards nor apply for new ones, but that is how you got into trouble to begin with. credit counselers will negotiate with your credit card companies and sometimes they will give a 0% rate or close to it. this will allow you to make a set payment based on your income to counselers who will then send it to your credit cards. it will slowly pay off that debt and the beauty of it is that after your done, your credit score isn't harmed .

The only way, if you can do it. The bk laws are so stringent, that only the really destitute can pull it off. If you have any ability to pay, then you will be required to pay something.

Talk to an attorney.

I know what I am talking about, as I did it 2 times.

Good luck.

This is indeed bad situation. Bankruptcy is an option but stays on your credit report for 7 years and will make getting credit extremely difficult for that time and forget getting a decent mortgage.

Luckily for you, credit card companies are just as eager for you to pay off these loans. They will usually work with you in order that you can pay off the debt, you'd be surprised. I would call the credit card company and discuss a payment plan where they disable your card and lower your rate and arrange equal monthly payment over a period of time.

This solution will of course only work if you learn to reel in your spending and avoid future credit card debt. There's a lot to say about thrift. (Read "The Way to Wealth" by Benjamin Franklin).

After you're on a payment plan, try and improve your credit rating so that you start getting low APR balance transfer offers for 12-18months. This will help you put your balances on a low APR card while paying it off. There are plenty of cards that offer 0% balance transfer for 12 months. If you think you're credit is good right now, this can buy you 12 months while you try and repay as much as possible.

I think that all of the answers above are partially correct. You can find another job or supplement your income but there are only so many hours in a day. Be wary of Credit Solutions they have over 500 complaints to the BBB and is currently under scrutiny by the FTC for misrepresenting the risks of there financial management program. Basically they ripped off the public for about 100 million dollars.

You should be looking into a debt settlement program but with your income being limited you would be better off doing it your self versus using a debt settlement company. Debt settlement companies may be able to get you a better settlement but it will cost about the same as your paying now. Settle your debt on over the next two years.

Contact me if you need other advice.

If a person has accumulated a large amount of credit card debt due to multiple credit cards, the need for a proper counseling for credit card debt consolidation can't be understated. Credit card debt consolidation counseling helps a person get vital insights into the facts that can help him get control over the credit card debt.

Credit card debt consolidation counselors are experts with a good knowledge of debt management, budgeting and behavioral patterns of credit card holders. These services are vital for those struggling to manage their credit card debts. Also called credit counseling or debt counseling the credit card debt consolidation counseling brings immediate relief to a credit card holder.

A person seeking credit counseling can get it from two types of organizations. The professional or commercial organizations, and the non-profit organizations. As depicted by its name or categorization, the commercial organizations charge money for their credit counseling sessions and consolidation help on the other hand the non-profit organizations offer free of charge services. Just because the non-profit organizations are free, it doesn't undermine their quality of service. The persons associated with such organizations are thorough experts and have lived the trauma of being under credit card debt themselves and hence bring their vital experience to the credit card holder.

When a person approaches a credit counseling agency, the first thing it will do is to take stock of the situation and get various facts about the credit card debt. The credit counseling agency collects data about the income, expenditure and spending habits. It will guide the credit card holder about budgeting benefits and try to inculcate good financial habits. If you don't mind messing up your credit, you can file for bankrupcy. For $12 an hour, I have no idea how you're going to pay this debt. I would suggest that you look for a 2nd job.

Credit card debt consolidation adds up all your unpaid balances and converts them into a single payment. This payment is far lesser than each of the individual payments.

When you finalize a plan with a debt consolidation company, the company repays your dues to your creditors. Then you make a single payment to the consolidation company every month. Your average new interest rate is much below the old interest rate.

All credit card debt consolidation loans include some type of credit card and debt counseling. You have to trim your lifestyle to eliminate unnecessary expenses. This will allow you to set your house in order. But this necessary, as the ultimate goal of debt consolidation is to help you out of debt, while keeping your home.

No my dear, you must get another job to pay for it. I refuse to cover your dear arst when you didn't know who to manage your money. So either take another job, or sell something of value to clear the debt. But do not file bankruptcy!

Get a second job. Maybe night security/doorman at a bar (provided you're over 21).

If you take the Bankruptacy option, It will stick on your credit for the next 10 years.

Are you wanting to buy a car or a home in the next decade? =)

There are Credit card debt relief programs out there. Don't use Crdit Solutions though. I used them coming out of college (I hit $20k) and they royally screwed my over, taking my credit from perfect to 570 in one year. i'm still trying to recover from them.
