First, if the debt has already been send to collections, it is probably too late to go back to the original creditor.
Second, it is always better to deal with collection agencies in writing rather than over the phone.
It depends on how old the debt is. The older the debt, the more likely they will accept less. If the debt is over 3 years old, offer 25%; 2 or 3 years old, offer 50%; less than 2, offer 75%. Lump sum gets the best deal. Payment plans must be short term -- less than 6 months.
Get any settlement agreement in writing and keep it, along with your payment proof, forever. Do not give the collector direct access to your bank account. |

here is what i did.
get copies of all of your credit reports. read them upside down & inside out until you understand them.
figure out what it will benefit you to pay off.
then figure out how much a month you can pay.
call each creditor w/ your offer. in my case,i was offered a one time reduced payment.
my stipulation was that they update my credit report & also send me a letter stating that the debt was closed.
good luck |

The problem isn't that you owe $6000, heaps of people owe heaps more than that and don't get into trouble. The problem is you aren't paying it back. There are lots of ifs and buts and maybes, but basically you have to show them you intend to pay the loan off.
The first essential is do you have a job? If you don't, then no amount of talking will convince them you want to pay the loan off, so you will have to get a job (or welfare or whatever).
The next essential is to show you intend to pay off the loan in a reasonable period of time, e.g. a year.
Whatever you do, make sure you keep them informed and you at least are paying the interest on the loan. |

99% of the time, they are willing to settle for a lot less than what you owe them. BUT, that is IF you are able to pay a lump sum to settle the entire agreed amount for the debt. If you can do that, they will often take 1/2 or 3/4 of the amount owed. Remember, however, this will show up on your credit reports for a long, long, long time --- stating that the account balance owed was "settled" or other words to that effect.
Another thing you can do is ask for a payment plan. They will most certainly want to work with you on that, so that you pay off the entire amount owed on a payment basis --- monthly. Often, they will chuck the interest charges in that case and only charge you the amount owed if you work out a payment plan.
Again, remember, if you are already in collections, you might want to contact the credit card company or whomever else it is that you owe the money to, directly. Ask them if you can work something out with them to pay them off. Paying through a ollection agency will always bite you in the butt. It always shows up on your FICO score as a result of your credit report(s).
P.S. What Alucard, who answered here said, is stupid and not true.
What Supa-Inc... , who answered you said, was the most foolish answer there is and, I'm sure it was a joke! |

Money talks.....usually you will be able to settle for a lot less IF you can pay cash - immediately. The longer you need to pay the more it will cost you.
If you can, negotiate for a full settlement, including a letter (once it is paid) to remove the collection and delinquency on your credit report. But in order to do this you will need to pay them most or all of the debt. |

work out a payment plan, BUT your credit is already bad if it has gone to collections, so don't make the payments to large. |

Sometimes they will lower it. Tell them you have been laid off and just don't have it. Tell them that you will pay it back over 36 months. |

You got two choices as I see it.
1. Ring and invite the Rep to lunch and a drink or two and see if a little side money can save your neck.
2. Invite them to a place where there is little or nothing but the kitchen table and a bed on the floor and cry poor. (Have a facial makeup that makes you look like death is but a few days away)
Then ask the Rep what's the best deal they can do for CASH which you hope your dear aged mother will lend you!
It's a wicked world and these scenarios have been used in many movies and tv soaps to enthral the captive audiences. It may just work for you! |
