♥ LIFE!!!
How to begin fixing bad credit?
Needless to say when I was younger I made some bad choices. The two largest things I did wrong was:

1. I deployed to Iraq and forgot to cut off my cell phone, and the bill went up to over $1000 and they turned me into a credit agency.

2. Charged $300 on a Kay Jewelers credit card and didn't pay and got turned into a credit agency.

3. and I'm sure I made some other mistakes along the way.

I have bill collector calling me about 3 times a week. They have offered to cut some of what I owe and receive payments over time. Is that something I should I do? My total debt owed is probably no more than $2000, should I consider consolidated debt and work montly to pay it off?

What are some ways I can get started on this, seeing exactly what the red marks are on my credit report without having to pay to see my report?

This is by far the most poplar question in the "credit" section. So here ya go...my step by step guide.

Do not consolidate, you don't have enough date to make it worthwhile and more often than not the consolidation is not all that great (sometimes worse)

1 - If you haven't already get current copies of your credit reports from the 3 major bureaus (Equifax, Experian and Transunion)

2 - Take a photocopy of each and put the originals in a binder

3 - Get a highlighter and highlight any account that is negative (collections, written off, older than 7 yrs, etc...)

4 - Any inactive account that is older than 7 yrs should not be deleted from your report. Download a dispute letter from the credit bureaus website(s) and fill in the details

5 - For collection/overdue items, if they are greater than 7 yrs dispute them as well

6- If there are still valid debts, you need to contact the creditor and negotiate a 'pay for delete' in addition to a payment plan if you cannot pay in full. If they start hounding you send them a 'cease and dessist' letter stating they may only contact you in writing.

7 - Do not apply for any credit while you are doing this or for the next year (ideally 2)

8 - If you currently have any credit card or loan balances, pay them off or at least pay them down to bring them current

9 - If you need a credit card, get a secured card from Capital One for $500 (or more if you can)....use it sparingly for like only $25-50 and pay in full and on time every other month or so to establish good re-payment history.

A little patience and 2-3 months, you'll be on your way.

The cell phone debt is easy. Contact JAG and ask about the Civil Service Relief Act. Your cell phone should have been cut off, with no fees. The problem is it has no gone to a collection agency.

Don't consolidate your debt. If they will cut the amount owed and take payments, you may be better of going that route. Then you just have to wait until they drop off your credit report. Have a WRITTEN agreement with them that states it will be removed from your credit report within 30 days of being paid in full.

You can see your report for free once a year. Go to annualcreditreport.com and follow their instructions. Both Transunion and Equifax have an online dispute process. But you can only dispute stuff that is inaccurate.

BIG B MAN
Do it yourself! It's easy! I was in the same boat and I will tell you what I did and now my credit is good!

First, request your free annual credit reports from the 3 major credit bureaus (website below-1). You need to see exactly what is good and what is not so good on your credit reports.

Second, dispute everything that's negative. Even if you know that something is valid...dispute it anyways (you can do this online once you obtain your free credit reports)! The creditor has 30 days to validate the debt. If they validate the debt, then dispute it again (this time in writing) to the credit bureaus. Send it via certified mail return receipt requested.

If the creditor validates the debt, then it's time to settle. However...never ever ever settle by phone! You make the offer and make it in writing! Send it to the creditor by certified mail return receipt requested. Sometimes creditors will settle on 10% of the debt.

Please don't consolidate as you can do it yourself. Believe me, I did it! There's also a website (again below-2) for people with not so good credit. It's awesome...they even have sample letters to send to creditors.

Good luck...believe me you will get out of it!

When I was married my ex was really bad about spending money and at one point we had several credit cards open and maxed to really high limits. What I did was get a consolidation loan for all the accounts. I think the first one was $10,000. and within a few years it was paid off, Unfortunately all the cards that were put into the consolidation loan were maxed out again and then we needed a $20,000 loan! At this point I knew that If we had any cards with available balances they would be used so I closed the cards that I paid off (though I hear it's not so good to do that).
It does take a few years for it to possitively affect your credit but the first thing to do is try to pay off what you owe, and taking their offer to pay it off is much better then being turned into the credit agency. You just have to prove that you are working with them to pay it off. But this is not an overnight thing, even if you get your credit report several times in one year (and I also heard that it's bad to have a lot of people look at your credit report).
Also, something I am currently going through right now; try not to put large amoounts on your card or use your card often, especially if you are close to your limit. My current card is now increasing my APR for using my card too much!! (didn't know you could be punished for using your card, but yeah you can)!!

Here are a few steps you can take to start fixing up your credit. It will take a little time but it can be done.

Also try to negotiate a deal with the bill collector to remove the negative entry in exchange for payment
