My girlfriends parents are asking her weird questions about things that she has purchased on credit without even actually knowing that she purchased them. She thinks as do I that they are checking her credit report online because they have her SS#. She's almost 20 years old. What can be done to find out if they are doing this and are there legal ramifications to this immoral act?
Additional Details
The card and accounts are in her name and she pays them completely off each month except for some furniture that we have for 12 months no interest and we pay 140.00 per month to get it paid off before any interest will acrew. |

Have her put the account on fraud alert through Trans Union Fraud Dept. Their toll free # 1-800 680-7289. They will notify the other 2 bureaus. It has to be renewed every 90 days in order to keep the account active. She should also request her free credit reports through annualcreditreport.com or call them toll free @ 1-877-322-8228 for all 3 free reports. Better to be safe than sorry later. |

from the way i understand it you must have permission to do a credit check thats how they get your ss#
call the credit reporting agency find out who is making inquireies they have to give you that info it's the law. |

I don't know but they should have gone to Free Credit Report.com. That's how you find out if their credit is bad. It's more simple that way. Plust you don't have to wind up selling fish to tourists in t-shirts if it's bad. |

If she is still living at home, and not paying her share of the family's expenses, she could still have invasions of her privacy. Are you sure that she hasn't asked the parents for money recently, or that she isn't paying them back for a previous loan? They do seem nosy if she is managing her finances well, but they may be worried if she is not. She could find out by checking annualcreditreport.com. If she or someone else has checked her credit within the last year, she won't be able to get a free report. |

If they are asking about specific items she has purchased on a credit card, they are getting the information somewhere else, since your credit report does not show individual purchases, only balances and payments.
If your girlfriend still thinks they are checking out her credit report, have her go to www.annualcreditreport.com and ask for her free copy of her reports. If she hasn't requested these reports in the past 365 days herself, then one of two things will happen: 1) she will get a copy of her reports, meaning that her parents are not accessing the reports under her ss# [you are only entitled to 1 report a year]; or 2) she will be denied access, meaning someone has already received the annual report (if not her, then maybe her parents).
Assuming that her mother or father do not own a business that belongs to the credit bureau(s), this would be the only way they could access her reports. |
