First, get a copy of your credit report so you know exactly where you stand. You're entitled to one free one per year. I believe it's just freecreditreport.com. You may be able to contest some items to help make your report better. There are many companies that can help you do that if you don't want to put the time in to do it yourself. Second, start paying your bills on time. The faster you establish a solid pay history the better. There's no sure fire way to do it in a short period of time. It can take years to reestablish good credit. |

if you have collections, make sure you find out when was the date of last activity. If it is older than 2 years, do not pay on those collections. All it does is allow for the bureau that reports to be able to report 7 years after the date of last activity, and bring the bad credit line current which hurts your credit. After 7 years-10 years, that credit line will not be able to be reported, and if it doesn't drop off, then you must have the bureau remove it from your report. The best way to get good credit in short period is to obtain credit cards, and there are several for bad/limited credit. You might have to pay an amount in fees, but it is worth it in the long run. Then use that credit wisely, and you will be on your way to having good credit. Good luck. |
