How to get a co-signer off a car loan?
So back in 2006 I got a car. I asked my mom to go along with me because I didn't know anything about buying a car and I didn't want to get ripped off. So I picked out the one I wanted and we sat down to do the paperwork. At the time it turned out that I had good enough credit to get it on my own, I just didn't have the income. My mom ended up co-signing for me (note that I didn't ask her to, I didn't want her to, and that wasn't the reason for having her along). All was good for awhile, I kept up with the payments...and then I got fired from my job and got behind and couldn't catch up. I got 3 months behind and my mom paid over $500 to help me catch it up (which she doesn't let me forget). So it was caught up and for a good year after that I made every payment on time. Now I've recently gotten a job that pays once a month, and I'm in a cycle of overdrafting my bank account. It's gotten to be 3 months late once again. I have been trying to pay it...it's not like I'm just not paying it and spending the money elsewhere, I'm just having trouble adjusting to getting paid once a month. So my next check, I'm just saying "f*ck all the other bills, f*ck getting food, I'm just paying off the 3 months due on the car payment to get it caught up. But I want to see about getting her off my car loan. I'm stressed out enough about money, I really don't need her breathing down my neck about the car payment and the guilt of messing up her credit along with mine. How can I get her off the car loan? I know I can refinance, but how do I do that?
Additional Details
PS, I don't care if I get a higher interest rate or even slightly higher payments because my credit isn't as good as it was when I first got the car...I just want my mom off as a co-signer.

Odds are she will not be coming off your car loan anytime soon!
The only way she comes off the note, is to pay off the note in full.

I suggest you get a part time job and start banking all the extra money and use it to get caught up. Once caught up, don't give up your pt job, keep banking the cash so you can get a bit ahead. Think ahead.
Also, just because you get a few bucks in your pocket, learn to not let it burn a hole in your pocket. I can just hear you, “I'm under so much stress that I need to go out and have a beer or two or three, or dinner with the girls”. Make responsible decisions and for your actions you will be rewarded. Like getting your car paid off and your mom off your back.

Sorry, I don't understand any excuse, reasons (like being really sick/physically limited). At 18, I bought my first new auto, my mom co-signed for me. I worked a full time and part time job to stay ahead of the bank payments. I ended up paying off the note 1 yr early. Yupp, and my second new auto was all on my own good credit.

Good luck

Auto finance is what I do for a living and with your credit not being as good as it was when you bought the car on top of your account being behind it's going to be next to impossible to find someone to lend to you in this economy.

Your best bet will be your own local bank or credit union.

You are correct, you will need to refinance the car, probably with a different lender. With your history of late payments, you are going to end up paying a pretty high interest rate.

Here is another idea. If you can't get as good an interest rate as your current loan, see if your bank can make an automatic payment for you timed for right after your paycheck is deposited.

Another option is to see if your work has the ability to split your paycheck into part electronic deposit and part physical check. then have the electronic deposit go straight into your mom's bank account, or better yet, an ACH transfer to the car loan

In other words, ask your bank what they can do to help you automatically pay the loan, that way you are not tempted to spend the money and your mom can quit worrying about it

.
You would have to refinance the car in your name only. This is going to be costly and your payments could increase dramatically.

The only way to "get a cosigner off the loan" is to pay off the loan - by cash or by refinancing it.

You can try your bank, but it's not likely you'll get her off until you've paid the entire loan. They required the co-signer so they can go after her for the money if you don't pay it, and you haven't been paying on time.

psychopiet
The only ways are if you find a bank willing to refinance without a co-signer or if your mother dies. The last option being unwanted and the first difficult due to your lowered rating I would say you get your act together, do some very basic budgeting to get you thru the month, start paying your bills like an adult and stop wining about how everybody else but you is to blame.

The only way to end her involvment is to pay off the loan. You cannot remove a cosigner as long as there is debt pending.

If you really don't want her hassling you anymore, start by solving your own problems instead of relying on Mom. If you are in a jam, figure yourself out of it.

edit: "I wanted to give the car up, or sell it for what was left on the loan, but my mom didn't want me to". Pardon me, but that is not solving your own problems. This is your life, not your Moms. Take control. Start making your own decisions and learn how to say no to your mother. Get a part time, second job if you have to make ends meet.
