How unusual is it for someone NOT to own a?
credit card in this day and age? People look at us like we have lobsters crawling out of our ears when we tell them we've never owned a credit card.

**edit** We already have established credit, in fact very good. We've been married for 29 years.

Outstanding, there should be more consumers in your position. Even FHA has concluded that just because a consumer does not have a credit card, doesn't make them any more or less of a risk than a consumer who does have one. According to pre-foreclosure and post-foreclosure audits it has been determined that the largest majority on defaults have occurred with consumers that had substantial credit utilization at the time they purchased the residence.
Keep up the good work!

I don't have one either!! I am 58 years old and have lived this long without One why would I want to go into debt at my age?? I know what you mean though, I have had the same skeptical stares when I shamefully bowed my head and admitted that I was not a good US citizen! So----------- I moved to Mexico! No body has one here! No problem lol

You're doing the right thing. Credit card companies profit from the public's misfortune. A late payment, take out cash for an emergency, or go over your limit, and they have the right to keep you in high interest forever. It's a very easy trap to fall in to. I had one once 14 years ago. Got in trouble. And never again.

My husband has 1 and I have 2. He uses his strictly for gas and I use mine for the same.

They are good for emergencies but we are responsible and don't carry credit card debt.

Even though your checking/savings is always available with an ATM card at least one credit card is really a good thing to have.

I would say it's somewhat rare. I only have one and pay it, in full monthly.

I think it is extremely unusual. Most people do have credit cards to use in case of emergency use like the death of a vehicle or something like that or to use during vacations instead of carrying cash. Congratulations on not having one, You have to be one of the smartest people I cyber know!!! lol

I think it's good you don't have one.
Keep it that way as long as possible.

Not having a credit card isn't bad as long as you have other means of establishing your credit, such as car loan, mortgage etc.

Personally I think as long as you have established credit, not having credit cards is awesome!

Not so weird. My folks never owned a credit card. They paid cash or had money orders made out for the bills and didn't have a checking account until they were much older when it was easier to write a check instead of going to the bank (that was 5 minutes away). Good for you !!!

It is a great way for you to stay out of debt...but having a credit card does help you with your credit history and score. If you are scared of getting a card...look into getting a card where you put money on it then use it (prepaid credit card)
