Hubris252 | How will this effect my credit? |
Last year I had to make some emergency expenditures and racked up a few thousand in credit card debt. I have been shifting this debt from card to card to take advantage of the low initial rate on balance transfers. Even counting fees this has saved me several hundred in interest payments. I'm worried however that the reporting agencies won't take that into consideration but only look at the fact that I've shifted the same debt to four different cards in about 18 months.
By the way, I have no other credit card debt and have never been late on a payment for anything. |

As long as you've not been late with any payment, your balance doesn't affect you unless you're trying to make a large purchase. I'd recommend paying it off before trying to buy a house to help your debt to income ratio, but for the time being, your score will not lower by having a large balance, it will only lower if you're late. |

Make sure that every time you shift the balance, you close the previous card. Having too many credit cards is not good even if the balances are zero because you could, if you wanted to, max out every single card in one day. That's what creditors look at. It's also good to have the balance on the card be as far below the limit as possible. It shows that you are not running up your balance close to your credit limit, which is a sign to creditors of irresponsible use of credit. You're doing the best you can, and that's all that you can do. With the rise in identify theft, there has also been a rise in the fear of low credit scores and bad credit reports, mostly fueled by the companies who make money off of said fear. Don't get caught up in that. It's a marketing technique/scam, and if you pay attention to what these companies say, you'll start to see that under their collective guidelines no one on earth has a chance of having good credit, unless you sign up for their product/service of course. |

you are definitely hurting your credit by switching from card to card. every credit line you've ever had will show up in your credit reports, when they were opened and closed. credit agencies can only see how much debt you have against you, those special fees you are receiving will not show up. One determining factor in your credit score is the number if credit lines you have opened, and when new ones are constantly being opened and closed, it doesn't look good at all.
The best way to build your credit is to stick with just a few, and pay off your debt. I suggest you stay with the card you have now and build some credit up. |

techincally i dont think it will affect it to much bc your paying the bill, but in the long run it wont help you, it will start to affect you negatively. Why dont you get a credit report and see what its doing your entiled to one free one from the three agencies. |

So you have 4 credit cards that are all paid on time & no other debt? The shifting will not hurt your credit. Just make sure you are paying down on the principal or you will not save money, since most times they charge you for balance transfers. I might even suggest closing one of the cards that has had a zero balance the longest. 4 credit cards is a little on the high side but still I would imagine your credit score is fine. |

Transferring debt does not hurt your credit if you are not incurring more debt. I did it to keep my interest rate at the low introductory rate of 0% years ago to pay off credit card debt. I have always had excellent credit. At that time, I was focused on paying off the debt so with every transfer, I closed the previously used card. |

What will affect your credit is the amount you have on loan compared to your credit worthiness. Example: If your credit worthiness is 10,000.00 and you are 2,000.00 in debt your credit score would be higher (given no late payments) than if you are 8,000 in debt. |

Moving the balance does not hurt your credit. The new cards do however. After 6 to 12 months that negative effect will start to turn to a positive as you keep the payments on time. Closing cards can hurt your score. The scoring model likes long established accounts. Utilizing a low amount of your available credit will help as well. If you are going to make a large credit purchase in the near future you may want to end the practice. i.e. a car or home loan. If the cards you are moving the balance to have high annual fees stay away. You will be tempted to close those cards and thusly hurt your score of be faced with paying fees and offsetting your savings. Hope this helps. |

Unfortunately when you move your balances from one card to another this is affecting your credit report. Check out this website...there is a lot of information on it. |

Creditors frequently look past the score and read the report. At some point you might find yourself unable to obtain credit because the creditors will label you as a jumper and figure that there is no point in dealing with you because you will be gone in a matter of months anyway as soon as you can get a better deal. |
