How would having too many credit cards even if I don't have balance due on them can affect my credit?
I have 4 credit cards and I recently got a new one, currently i only have two of them with balance. Even though i have no balance on the other ones. can these affect my credit? should i cancel a couple of them?

I think your credit score is based on how much of your available credit you are using, so empty cards wouldnt affect it. closing them would affect it because instead of say 30k available credit, you'd have 15k. ....therefore you would be using more of your available credit.

1. Yes, they can affect your credit. The total of your credit limits (not just your credit in use) affects your credit score.
2. It is almost never a good idea to cancel your oldest card. The age of your oldest card (this is officially called "length of credit history" or something like that) helps your score.
3. Closing your newer cards may help if the total of your credit limits is too high. However, it will hurt if it makes the total of your debts too high a percentage of the total of your credit limits.

Yes if your not going to use them again close then because this counts against you as possible debt.
It lowers your credit score.

Credit rating agencies look not only at how much you actually owe they also look at how much you can borrow based upon available credit. When they look at your situation they see that you could, whether you do or not, take on quite a bit more debt. I strongly suggest cancelling several of them. But, keep what you need in case of emergency. Cancel the one(s) with the highest interest rates. Happy Holidays

I've heard this is true. I'm not sure why.

Because a creditor might think you have TOO many and use them whether they have a balance or not............not good....Just have one to use sensibly and one for emergencies.....trust me....

Well creditors do look at the amounts that you have out on them all together. Dont cancel them let them sit for a while because if you cancel them it drops your credit score.

Yes, it will adversely affect your credit because if you have too much open credit, the reporters will see that you COULD get yourself into trouble. Lenders are less apt to loan you money if you already have access to lines of credit.

closing them doesn't always help, but it's worth it to keep yourself from the temptation.

I've been declined credit for having both "Too Many Open Lines of Credit" and "Having Closed Too Many Cards Recently"

YES,,, the more credit that you have the lower that your credit score goes,,, i asked the a credit company why and they said that it is because even if you have no balance,, they look at it like you have a lot of AVAILABLE credit.....so in theory you could go out the next day and max them ALL out...it is a risk
