Hows long does a judgement against me stay on my credit report after it has been paid off?
I didn't pay tuition for one semester and the school filed a judgement against me....I paid off this judgement one year ago but it still shows on my credit report...the amount was for $6,500 but was paid in full but it still shows an outstanding balance on my credit report. How long does it take for a judgement to be shown as paid on a credit report. Also, my credit score is 559-- once that is shown as paid how much should I expect my credit score to go up?

Wow, another assortment of amazing answers.

curse08, that information certainly is interesting.....I've helped a lot of people with judgments...read a lot of laws.....not once have I read what you are talking about.

How about this one....in some states the creditor must file a "statement of satisfaction" once the debt is paid. If they don't, they could be held in contempt and fined by the court.

But every state has their own court procedures...and generally the creditor must file a "statement of satisfaction" with the court. If they do not, you will have to file a motion, and supply proof that you paid it.

Disputing this with the credit bureau is not the best way to fix it. All they are required to do is verify with the court that their information is accurate. The court will show the debt as unpaid, so your dispute comes to a screeching halt!

So...start by contacting the credit and demand that they notify the court the debt is paid. File a motion in the meantime....this should be a very simple matter of filling out a court form and handing it to the clerk. Once done, take the proof from the court and mail it to the credit bureau, along with a dispute letter.

Now the bad news.....the judgment will NOT be removed from your report.....but they will have to show the balance is paid off. The judgment will stay on for 7 years, from the date of the judgment.

Call the court house and explain to a clerk of the court. Send a letter to each othe 3 major agencies disputing it showing as still outstanding.

If the judgment is still showing as an outstanding debt, dispute with each credit bureau that is reporting the incorrect information. It should take about 30 to 45 days for the bureaus to update your status to 'judgment satisfied'.
A paid judgment will remain on your credit reports for 7 yrs. from the date the judgment was entered or awarded to the creditor.

Stays on 7 years. Ask creditor to submit judgement as satisfied/paid - lessens effect.

default is 7 years, way to long l think, though some lender will still give you a loan though you interest rate will be higher

You got a lot of good advice here but one thing I have not seen on here is probably very important to your situation. A judgement is a little different than a collection. Once paid off most court houses make you pay a fee to release it. Usually between 75-150 dollars. I'd pay the money to have it released. Take your receipt from the court house or letter saying the judgment has been paid and there is a zero balance and send it with a copy of your SS card, drivers license, copy of credit report and a letter asking for it to show a zero balance and send it certified mail to each of the three credit bureaus. They have 30 business days upon receipt to make any corrections then each bureau should send you a copy of your updated report. Hope this helps.

Bankruptcy can't be filed for the same Chapter within 7 years. Credit information stays on your record for 10 years, regardless whether it's good or bad. While a satisfied judgement doesn't hurt your record quite as bad as an unsatisfied one, it's still there that a judgement had to be taken.

A credit record is a track record. As in almost anything, you're not perfect. If you're doing good most of the time, and screwing up only rarely, then you have a good track record, even if there are a few bad marks in there. If you've got lots of bad marks, then taking care of them doesn't help you much. The fact that they are there at all speaks more about you.

The best way to raise your credit score is to increase your good marks while NOT getting any new bad marks. In other words, it's going to take awhile, but there is no magic bullet to remove bad marks from your credit record under 10 years.

If the judgement you are talking about is a court order it depends. THis is not a bankruptcy or foreclosure we are talking about so seven years from the date the debt was incurred is the rule not 7 years from the date of the judgement

i hope this helps

Each organization has to report items individually to the bureaus. If they don't then it remains static. If you have a letter or a statement showing "paid in full" you can contact the credit bureaus and provide proof of payoff. Hopefully they will remove the judgement.

If not, consider hiring a credit attorney. A judgement is a pretty severe thing and you should try to get it removed.

A credit attorney will charge you monthly so you can just pay them for their services to get the one item removed and then cancel their services.

You can find out more about credit repair and credit attorneys on my website here:

http://www.1-800badcredit.com

The only reason I mention a credit attorney is because sometimes going up against a big organization (like a college, or a utility company, or a hospital) can be challenging and frustrating, whereas a credit attorney knows the ins and outs and can probably get it taken care of faster than you can on your own.

Good luck to you!
