I would like to get a credit card just to build credit while I'm in college, so when I get out I have a head start if I want to purchase a vehicle or a house in the future. I would only use it for inexpensive purchases (under $10) and pay it off right away.

Well I'm in the same position as you (and only a few years older than you). I found out that since you are a student you can apply for a student credit card. Go to your bank, and talk to them ... or go to a credit card site and type in "student credit card" and look at your choices. If this fails, like I said earlier go talk to your bank representative and he/she will be able to get you in the direction you need to be in. |

Citi, Chase, and HSBC will give credit out to anyone but their terms might make you wish you had never got it in the first place. I would recommend going to who ever you bank with and get the card through them. At least that way it can be used a over draft just in case you forget to write down that tank of gas in your check registry. If you currently do not have a bank account setup I would recommend going to a credit union, they general offer better rates on loans in general and savings. If you need help finding one go here http://www.findacreditunion.com/ They might also have better private student loan options if you ever need them |

secured cards are perfect you actually put money in a savings account and thats your credit limit. you dont need credit history to be approved and it does build credit.

It is not an issue, credit card companies love to give students cards. They know if the student doesn't pay their parents will. |

You should be able to get something. Local banks are always good. Dept store credit cards always have less strict standards in granting credit too. Be warned however that dept store cards have higher rates than most other cards out there. |

My grandson was in the same situation. At my suggestion he went to his bank (where he had had an account for over two years) and asked them for a Visa card. He had no trouble getting a regular card with no annual fee and a credit limit of $500.
I'd suggest you do the same. Don't do this online. Actually go into the bank and talk to someone. If they don't seem helpful, ask for the branch manager.

You can all ready get a card but your limit with probably be around 500 dollars that's about it, also when you go to register at your college at the college they usually have tables set up with a credit card with that schools Symbol on it! |
