I started by getting a gas card and a department store card. Everything just flowed from there.

That's probably not very good advice as it is not detailed, so try the steps in the article below.

Get a loan or a credit card....charge a small amount (200.00).
Make sure to pay the amount due on time, a couple days in advance would be better.
*****DON'T be late on making a payment.*****
The longer you keep a particular credit card the better it looks on your credit report.

I WISH I could answer your question correctly; I just had to say to be sure to do your research and whatever you do in life, don't mess your credit up. Nobody told me that growing up and I'm STILL paying for my mistakes! So sorry I didn't answer your question, I just had to say that to you;;; I wish someone said that to me. Your credit will help you so much in life. You probably already know that. :) Good for you to do some research, but look deeper than Yahoo Answers okay!

Try "Suze Orman" online.

Credit is GREAT!!! When it is used appropriately! Building credit is a great idea; however, the only credit that will benefit you at all is good credit.

What is your reason for wanting to "build credit?" To get credit in the future? Build it the right way, perhaps through school loans. Do not fall into the trap of believing you must have access to liquid or unsecured funds (such as a credit card) in order to build credit.

Keep this in mind: NO CREDIT will benefit you an infinite number of times as BAD CREDIT!

Good luck! Remember 18 is the jumping off point to adulthood and making responsible decisions. From here on out, everything you do is on your shoulders and will be with you for a number of years.

There are 4 ways:

Open new accounts that report to the credit bureaus.

Piggyback other peoples credit.

Keep your debt low.

Pay your bills on time.

Best way is DON't
Credit is the new 21st century slavery.
What you want to do is work 2 more jobs, save up money for anything you buy.
learn about credit screw ups and why it will happen to you . visit DaveRamsey.com to learn what isn't taught at school.
Cash is freedom Credit is slavery

"Building" your credit is not something you need to do. The only reason that you would need to have credit is if you intend on borrowing money. Borrowing money is a bad idea and generally gets people into financial trouble. Try to live your life debt-free and only buy what you can afford.

If you still think you need to "build" your credit, you are going to have to borrow money from someone (like a credit card company) and prove that you are capable and willing to pay it back. Like I said before though, this will most likely bring you far more harm than good.

As easy as it seems to build credit by a cc...it's just as easy to create bad credit. The key is managing payment with the income u earn and not over doing it!!! If u get a credit card..make the payments on time. Basically, if u purchase something on a cc...make sure u can pay it off within two months. This helps show u are responsible with money. If u have many purchases and can't keep up with payments and never pay it off....u have created bad credit. Everyone has been there once before. So be consistant and on time.
