ßrϊtt ßrϊℓℓϊaηcε | I'm 19 and I Have NO credit....? |
i'm 19, i don't have any credit, i don't have anything in my name, not even my cell phone (it was my mother's bright idea to put it in her name, worst mistake ever). i have a checking account, but i'm not sure if that really helps my credit or not. and i'm thinking about getting a credit card, but i know with my spending habits (which i'm trying to control), that may not be the best thing for me. what can i do to get credit? Additional Details and i didnt mean i have totally terrible spending habits, i DO budget and DO put away at least 33% of my income into my savings account. however there are times where i have a tendency to splurge on things like clothes, or i impulse-buy, which everyone does, but i *don't* spend more than i make. |

I agree that a credit card isn't a good way for someone who might have bad spending habits isnt' the best idea. However, the american way requires you to have good credit in order to dang near buy or apply for anything. The best way to build credit is to get a credit card that YOU request the limit and don't go past it. Banks are great for doing this (be sure it's NOT a debit card, that won't build credit) ... so are credit card companies. Ask for maybe a $200 limit. Be strict with yourself to purchase something ... pay it off within 3 months (you know your budget) and then do it again. Within 6 months to a year, you'll be building your credit score. Be careful though ... it's easy to fall into the credit card trap of spending what you think you have ... when it's just a LINE of credit ... it's not money you HAVE. Get in the right mind set and set a goal ... you'll be fine! |

OK, as a financial advisor, my two recomendations for you are a credit card with a short line of credit ($500) or take a out a signature loan of about 1000 and pay it off in six months... (Not hard if you invest it. you might actual be able to turn a profit.) But ultimately if you can control your spending habits the only way would use credit is for a car or house or maybe a buisness loan... Good luck |

Try getting a credit card with a small credit limit (so you don't get yourself in debt trouble) and just charge things on it and pay it off each month. This will help you build a good credit history. Try http://millionaires.ezcreditcardz.com for a list of CC to apply for. |

Credit cards are the easiest way, however if you do not trust yourself, then do not get one.
In order to "get credit", you need to borrow some money. If you have no need to borrow money, then why worry about credit?
Here is what I suggest you do. If you want to establish some credit, get a credit card. Then, when it comes... activate it. Go buy your mother dinner with it. Then come home and cut it in half. Pay your bill on time, and then do not use the card again. But, KEEP the account open. |

Start off with a credit card that has good interest rates and pay it off completely each month. Doing this will allow you to eventually be credit worthy enough to purchase a house and a car. For the best rates go to

The credit system can go suck a big one. BS convoluted system that screws people over more than it helps them and makes them focus way too much time and energy on things that shouldn't matter (charge something, pay for again in installments, refinance this and that, etc... ugh!).
I'm 22 and have no credit (but quite a bit of money in the bank)... I had this panic a few months ago (apartment hunting in a very competitive market). Meh. I suggest just finding ways to weasel around it. Better in the long run, and you may save your soul in the process. =p
Go feed ducks at the park or play with dogs or help an old woman find the right bus to take. You'll be happier.
(OK, please ignore me, I'm rambling).
If you must build credit... the best way is probably to get a credit card, using only ONCE a month (then pay cash for everything else) for grocery shopping or something (ie: something that you'd NEED to buy to live, like food), then pay your bill off in full at the end of each month. Within about 6 months, you'll have good credit. |

You can get a subsidized credit card. That's one where you "bank" a certain amount of money and then you can spend it. You can build up your credit in this way until you have enough credit to get a real card. |

The only real thing to to is to get a credit card. Get one with a very low limit (it shouldn't be hard to do since you have no credit history) and just remember every time that you charge that you are stealing whatever you are buying unless you have enough in your checking account at that moment to buy it. Also picture your house/apartment/car/etc that you need good credit to buy. The fact that you are worried you might go crazy is already a good sign that you will be responsible. Only buy what you can afford without a credit card. Good luck. |

Well, being that you have a checking and a savings account, you're a step or two ahead of the game. As long as you've taken care of your accounts and kept them in good standing, you're establishing a rapport with the bank by becoming a "valued customer" which helps when you're trying to get products like credit cards, car loans, mortgages, etc. What you may want to do is see if your bank offers secured credit cards, which are an excellent way of building credit. You have to put a deposit upfront to establish a line of credit. So for example, you place a deposit of $300, then your credit limit would be $300. Now the deposit isn't used to pay for whatever charges are made on the card, you'd still have to pay it like you would a regular card. The deposit, however is usually linked to a savings accont or CD, which gains interest while you're building credit. You can also increase the credit limit by simply adding to the deposit, which can look good when you're building credit because not only it shows responsibility with higher limits, but it also creates a cushion between what you owe altogether and your available credit.
A good way to use the card is to treat it as if it only had a $50 limit, but you'll only use $20 a month. This way you can start working on fixing your spending habits. Just make small purchases (like $20/month) that can be paid off on time in full every month, and boost the credit line as much as possible. As long as you pay on time and keep the balance low, if not 0, usually after a year the card either converts into a regular card or a better card is offered, and more importantly the deposit is no longer needed and is given back to you. This way, you;ve fixed your spending habits, built some credit, created a savings nest egg, and got a credit card out of the deal. That's a win-win-win-win situation all the way around. |

Listen to Rick B, please. We are told that we need a great credit score to get things in life, which is not true. The FICO score is a number that lenders look at to determine your credit worthiness for loans. However, if you don't need to use someone else's money, then why would a credit score matter?? It doesn't to me. The only thing you will probably really need a loan for is a home, and there are lending companies that do their own underwriting, so they can look at other factors (like payment of rent) to determine your credit worthiness.
Using your own money will teach you to buy what you can afford. It already sounds as though you are a good saver. Try putting that money you save in to a money market account where it will gain a greater amount of interest. |

Why do you need to get credit? You just admitted you have spending issues. The last thing you need is a way to spend money you don't even have.
Save up and pay cash!!!
