I'm 19 years old, full time college student, thinking of getting a credit card. What should I look for??
I do not currently have a part time job (but I do have money saved up). I wanted a card that will give me points and/or rewards. Any suggestions on where to look? Should I even get one?

I like the citi mtvU card. The card was a really good rewards card for me. It gives 5 points for every dollar you spend at bookstores, music stores, video stores, movie theaters, and my favorite restaurants. I spend over $500 a semester on books so its nice. The card also gives you 25 points for
paying on time and 250-2000 for your GPA.
GPA ThankYouSM Points
2.50 - 2.99 250
3.00 - 3.49 500
3.50 - 3.99 750
4.0 2,000
You earn 1 point for every other purchase.

The points can be redeemed cash, giftcards, or student loan rebate. I recommend using it for student loan rebate because you get the most out of your rewards that way(1 point = 1 cent).

The card only has a 6 month intro 0% apr but you shouldn't be keeping a balance as you will get into debt. (My only complaint is when they sent me the card I was surprise they gave me a 1 year 0% intro but it ended in 6 months.)

The card also gave me the best credit limit out of any card I have.

I don't think its too early to start building your credit. I started when i started college, even though I got tricked into signing up for a credit card(I didn't use this card for a year). Just make sure you pay off your balance every month like I did. But the credit I built up in 2 years allowed me to get a car loan at 6.34% which isn't bad.

The experts say......DON'T! I've never heard any of them advise anyone to get one, only advise against it. Besides, if you don't have a job, chances are good you wouldn't be approved for one anyway. Credit cards are too easy to use, and without income, what's your chances of being able to pay the bill? Save your savings for important unexpected things!

First, make sure you will be frugal and be able to pay off the charges on your card (if not totally each month, then at least within 3 months) or you'll put yourself in debt in no time. Look for a low APR (you can do an online search)--do not get one with 18% or more (at one point, it got down to a single digit percentage but I don't think they offer those anymore). The lower that is, the less you'll be paying in interest charges. Also read the fine print to make sure the interest percentage or APR isn't just a temporary introductory offer that will expire and increase significantly after a certain number of months. You want one that stays low all the time. Also read what the late charges will be (hopefully you'll never have to deal with that but there are always inadvertent things that can happen). Make sure you understand everything you are agreeing to. Some cards offer "paybacks"--you buy something and the card either credits you a small amount for each purchase, or figures out a small pay back based on how much you've purchased that year--that's especially good if you don't carry a balance from month to month (if you pay off your card each month). Others give you frequent flyer miles. Others offer other kinds of incentives. Whatever one you decide offers you the most, just make sure your interest rate is as low as you can find (because some cards are charging 25% interest which is outrageous). And just be very careful; it's your credit history in that card.

As the name suggests, a student credit card is specially designed for students and is very different from your regular credit card. Because it may be the first time for college students to apply for a credit card, most credit card companies designed their student credit cards to be a form of secured credit cards.

It will help a student to avoid accumulating high amounts of debt because of reckless spending. If you need groceries, or that recommended book but you don't have the money for it, then it may be time for you to use your student credit card. It is good if you start learning good financial habits from your student life itself. Don't use the card to pay for everything and anything. Use it judicially or it will land you in a debt to repay after the college finishes. Apply online for a best student credit card at: http://www.credit-card-gallery.com/Student_Card.html and get instant approval.

The first thing you have to do is make sure you pay any credit card off monthly, because the interest rate will be so high that once you do not pay it off you'll probably never pay it off as the interest will keep growing and growing. Now the next thing is to look into them to see of you like money back with purchases or flyer miles or money towards a car, so after that you can try discover , visa or master card, they are the most popular, All interest rates will be about the same which is going to be 18 % and above so that;s why it;s important to pay it of monthly before you even get one.

The rewards points are scams. If you ever read the fine print on the cards (the terms and conditions), you'll find that your options to collect points are so limited that the chances of you ever getting anything for carrying the card is virtually nil.

You need to look for a card that does NOT carry an annual fee and you need to look at the APR that you're being charged. Many cards give you confusing percentages and charge different rates for different activities. If you are not super cautious, a credit card can get you into a lot of trouble.

Usually college students are charged very high annual percentage rates (interest), esp. if they don't have a job. My honest advice is that unless you absolutely need one, don't get one. The temptation to use it will be great and you must be able to pay off the balance in full each month, otherwise you'll rack up debt very quickly and it will be very expensive.

The important thing to remember is that if you have to charge it, you cannot afford it.

Go out and look for a credit card but decide on a purpose for that credit card. I'm a college student and I have two credit cards, one from Walmart and one from Bank Of America. I found the information at a blog, that told me the exact reasons why you need a credit card as a student, access to funds, to buy student materials at a discount and to build a good credit score.

Credit cards are bad because they allow people to spend money they don't have, and hundreds of thousands of people have screwed themselves over with credit cards (I know some of them). But on the other hand, credit is becoming more and more important these days. And when it comes time for you to get a loan on a car or a house, a few tenths of a percentage point on your interest rate can save you lot of money. And having credit cards can raise your credit score. You don't even have to spend money. Just get a card that has no monthly/yearly fee and only charges interest, and then cut it up and throw it away. You will still earn points on your credit score. The most important thing is do not spend any money on a credit card if you don't have a job. If you do get a job, they have specific credit cards for college students that have low interest rates and low limits. If you have to go with a regular credit card, remember that they advertise "introductory rates" like 5.9% or something that sounds real good but after 6 months it jumps to 16% so always read the fine print. Credit cards are good for raising your credit score but beyond that they are bad.

I would suggest going to http://www.ineedrates.com and comparing the popular credit cards that are available. Look for low interest rates and rewards. Good luck.
