I'm 20, how do I build credit? I pay for a car but that's not really helping all that much. Any ideas?
I heard you can get gas cards or something like that to improve your credit. I'm young so I'm not trying to buy a house or anything, I'm just worried about 1 day having bad credit so I want to build it and keep it good. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Please help!!!

go to creditcards.com and you'll find credit cards that will help you build credit.

Get a card with a small balance on it. Use it ONLY for gas and pay it off COMPLETLY every month. Your credit score does not look how at how much you spend, but if you pay it off immediately.

It's good that you are thinking about that now because your credit is so important!

It's a hard position. Utility bills help if consistently paid. I'd think a call to the local credit card debt consolidation company would "pay" off.

get credit cards and charge things to them, but only amounts you know you can pay off at the end of the month. eventually they will start to raise the credit cards limit and eventually your credit score climbs. it's all about being able to pay back what you borrow, so borrowing is good if you can quickly pay it back. be careful about how many cards you apply for. if you decide to cancel a card this will negatively effect your score, so don't go crazy with gas cards or any other cards. I started out with about three cards and now I have really high limits after only four years.

you can also check you credit online at the link below for free.

Be glad that your are young and on the right track! What ever you do remember to keep you debt level low and make your payments on time. It took me a long time to correct my youthful mistakes. I learned quite alot from mycreditadvise.com it really helped.
You sound like a bright person so keep on asking questions that is how you learn!

Good luck!

I would recommend not getting any additional credit. Credit cards can really sink you fast financially by continually raising your limit and payments go higher as you charge more. Then people charge a little more thinking they will get it paid eventually, but eventually doesn't come because emergencies with cars or other life circumstances happen and the money is needed elsewhere. It's always better to save for an item you need and pay cash. A person should have at least $1,000 in emergency savings in an account. After you reach that goal, then work at getting 3 to 6 months of your monthly salary in a savings account in the event you are laid off or become ill. This is the advice I would give someone starting out, or anyone having financial struggles. I only wish someone had shared this with my husband and I when when we first started out. These are the things our parents didn't teach us. I know it isn't exactly what you wanted to hear, but I hope it does help you in some way.

Hmm... Well, there might be better ways then this, but I got a Watch at a Jewelry Store on Credit to start my Credit... The most important thing to maintain Good Credit is to make all of your Payments on Time... What they want to see is you Making Payments on a Credit Account, and Making them on Time... And in time, you establish Credit... I've heard that People sometimes get a Gas Card, and just Charge all of their Gas on it, and Send in a Payment right when they Get the Bill... But try not to owe very much on it... Just enough to have a small Balance, and just keep making Payments... Your Car Payment does help too, but I think a Credit Card of Sort would also be good.

Later in Life, House Payments will look good... Also, it looks good to Pay Off a Car... Good Credit Takes Time, but just keep making those Payments.

credit is only good for borrowing money... borrowing money puts you in debt..

why would you want either?

don't believe me? end up like most people... excellent credit, no money.. lots of toys, lots of payments.. living paycheck to paycheck.

If you dont have payments. you have money. If you have money, you don't need to borrow. when you don't borrow, you own everything you "buy".

I was in the same boat a couple years ago. No credit is the same thing as bad credit, so many lenders won't aprove you. You can go to the bank - I know for a fact both citibank and bank of america, possibly others - and ask for an application for a secured credit card. The way this works is you fill out the application, and give them a money order (for somewhere from 200-2000 dollars). Whatever you give is the limit on the card. You are free to use the card up to that limit. At the end of 18 months they will return your initial deposit (plus like 1% interest). This will raise your limit as long as you keep the balance low and never miss a payment. You will also start getting offers for more cards. Dont' get anymore then 4-5 cards, because this has a neg effect.

Don't miss any payments on any accounts.

Also order your credit report, find out what's on it. I use mycreditkeeper monthly to check my scores and credit. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!

get a credit card and max it out, right away, (like if it is a small limit, like 500-600 bucks) and then pay the minimum payment for 6 months, then pay it off.... then repaeat.. nothin raises your credit score like paying ontime, and paying interest

in a word. capital one. they approve everyone for a 300.00 limit cc. use it and pay it on time. carry a balance of no more than 50% of your limit.
