All of the answers that I have read are right on...you have to charge something and then pay it off. Even if you have the cash to pay for the item, charge it and pay it off. This gives you a record that cash payments don't do.
You probably will get some credit card offers in the mail, I do. If they are offering, apply but not before you read the small print that details the terms and conditions. They can really get you on that one if you aren't careful. |

Patty, listen to me. Do NOT get a credit card. You are one of the lucky ones that the credit card companies don't have their meathooks sunk into. Go to DaveRamsey.com and learn about how credit cards are a trap. |

Get a credit card with a spending limit. Use it to buy gas for your car and pay it off as soon as you get the bill. Pretty much, use it as a gas card, that way you don't rack up high charges and you can pay it off on time and earn credit. |

Department stores credit cards are the best way to start. Buy something there and pay them on time for a few month - you have a credit history already. |

Open up a credit card and when you make purchases, make sure you pay it off right away and not acumulate debt. |

Banks are eager and quick to raise your limits on credit cards. But you have to prove to them you can handle it. What you should do, try to get a credit card , even if it has a small limit. If they give you 300 credit line, put 300 on the card every month, and then PAY IT OFF every month. This will show the bank you can easiyl handle that. Then what will happen is you will quickly get your limits raised. From there you just have to excercise caution. Ex.. dont go over your limit, always pay your bill every month.. ect ect.. Before you know it you will be out of debt. |

Start by opening a savings account with a bank that will give you a secured credit card.
Here is some additional info. Hope this helps. |

I currently work in finance and home loans so I see this every day. What I can recommend is to get a secure credit card or to get a credit card from those companies like Orchard Bank or Capital One who give credit cards to new borrowers. They are high interest and low credit limits but in the long run it will help your credit. Credit cards like department store and gas cards really dont help out your credit as much as major credit cards like Visa or Mastercard.
Another thing you can do is make sure you pay your utilities and cell phone bills on time everytime. You may be able to use these bills as alternative credit lines in the future when you choose to purchase a home.
Any credit line over 12mos on your credit report is what helps you out the most. But don't go buck wild....maintain your balances under 30% of the credit limit...this will drive your score up every month instead of down.
Good luck! |
