They supposingly do work, but you then have to pay them a small fee. You might try contacting your Credit cards and asking them to freeze the accounts(if thats what you want) or cancel them sending them back to them and making arrangements with them. Its worth a shot. Also, you could call a few of the credit counseling places and ask what thier process is and what are the fees for their services. |

No! According to people who have worked and know of people who worked for some of these companies, all the 'Credit couseling companies' do is move a bunch of numbers around and in the end you still end up paying the money you owe the bank, and EXTRA to the company who 'helped' you.
If you want credit counseling, maybe look for a nonprofit agency that works with credit card companies. I personally would call, the Bank wants their money, and if you can some how cut a deal with them personally, 'lowering your apr', etc.
In the end the Bank wants their money, besides lowering your apr, those 10gs will be coming out of your pocket no matter how you look at it. Just try to find a way to make sure it doesn't get any higher than that. |

First thing you want to do is stop digging yourself deeper. Focus putting your money aside and don't run off and spend all your money just because you have it.
See if you can get 10-20% of your paycheck diverted directly to a savings account as opposed to your regular checking account or cash in an envelope.
A good credit counseling company will intervene with credit card companies and other creditors and try and lower your interest rates, negotiate lump-sum settlements, etc.

Yes..a credit counseling agency will attempt to get you a lower interest rate on your credit cards in order to coax you into paying them down.
You can usually expect to pay back your entire balance on the debt that you owe and anywhere between six and twelve percent of the interest. This is about half of what your normal interest would be.
But when you speak with the potential credit counseling agency be sure that you get all the exact terms and conditions from them.

My husband and I were in serious and looked into credit counseling. They basically wanted us to pay them a fee ,around $500, and they would call the credit agencies themselves and try to renegotiate our payments. This wasn't an option for us. We decided to do this for ourselves. This site was helpful for us. Check it out:

There are some good companies out there.
If you are current or in collections will be a different kind of company that will help you to get out of debt.
Check www.first-consumer.com they have a good explanation on both methods.

If you have many collection accounts and are being hasseled your best bet is not credit counseling. Visit creditboards.com. It is an excellent source for people who are trying to rebuild their credit. It goes into detail about the steps you need to take to repair your credit. I am currently in the same boat as you and the site has help immensely. It is a free forum with many people like you and me. They are some great people that will answer all your questions. They also have letter for settling debt and debt verification letters. I had many debt and was being hasseled by credit collection agencies. I have since had two CA removed from my report without having to pay. It takes some time but this is the routeI would go. You do not need a credit counseling agency. You can do better with out them. Also if some of the debt is old if you pay it, it can reset the seven years it stays on your credit report. And some might be passed the statute of limitations. good luck.

I would suggest working with the companys you are in debt with first. Some place will not accept work with credit counseling companies. |
