I'm new to the USA, how do I start credit?
Hi, recently I moved to the USA, right now I'm seeking to complete my steps of the USMLE and hopefully getting into a residency program at a hospital near 'home'.

Thing is as I'm new here and don't have bank accounts under my name as I'm still studying I'm afraid that my lack of credit may affect me at the time I decide to buy a car or when I get to afford moving on my own so I'd like to know what are the best ways to start credit here as in the best type of bank account, credit card or debit card that would suit my needs and what are the best banks to deal in this kind of situation. Thank you for anything

Whoever says don't get credit is WRONG! Having no credit can be just as bad as having bad credit..trust me on this. The best way to establish credit can be done in 2 ways: either get a credit card with a $1000 dollar limit or less so that you can pay it off easily or you can take out a small loan. If you have a passport, then you should be able to open up a checking and/or savings account.

get a credit card , use it conservativlly and always pay off the whole balance. Open an additional one or two that you never use just because it will help that you dont use everyhing to the max and dont have debt. Also definatlly open a checking account first.

You should look for a bank that does not charge you a monthly fee. Find a bank that offers a free checking account and free check ordering. It will save you a lot in the long run. At most banks, you can not apply for a loan for any amount unless you meet their requirements such as, having the same job for 2 years and having an account with that bank for a certain period of time. As bad as credit cards are, you will need one to jump start your credit. Since you have no credit, you should only get like a $300 credit limit anyway and a monthly minimum payment on that with an interest rate of 21% would only be like $10 to $12 dollars. Remember that if you pay only the minimum payment, you are basically paying only the interest charges. So every other payment, try to pay double you minimum payment amount. It will take a while because most credit agencies only report credit like every 6 months to a year. Some of your bills will help your credit. Cable, phone, internet, gas and electric bills all affect your credit. Just get out there and be careful with your credit. It doesn't take long to mess your credit up, but it does take a long time to get your credit good again.

You have a couple of choices. The best thing to do now is to open a savings account with a bank near where you live. You should also try to get a credit card to start establishing credit. Here are a few alternative credit cards you can get.

1. Student Credit Cards

You will probably receive offers soon in the mail for these. But most have no annual fee. All major credit card issuers issue them. Apply for one and use it responsibly to start your building process.

2. Citi Platinum Select Card

Citibank is now allowing those with no credit history to apply for this card. This card has no annual fee as well and you could try to apply for this card.

3. Get a secured credit card

If the above two fails, then go to your bank and try to get a secured credit card. You need to put a deposit with them (which acts as a collateral). Make sure the card reports to the three major credit bureaus, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. After 6-18 months, you should qualify for a regular unsecured credit card (and you should also be getting more offers in your mail).

Before you apply, make sure you get your Social Security number and make sure your new address is in your SS files. As you have no credit history, you want to make sure that your SSN and address are valid, correct and in the "system".

Check with the hospital where you get your residency and see if they have a credit union. If they do, you should be able to open up a savings and checking account with them. Build up your savings, always pay your bills on time, and you will start to build credit.

Getting a credit card is also a way of establishing credit, but only if you are VERY disciplined. If you use the card strictly for building up your credit, charging $50 or less a month and paying it off every month, then it is working for YOU. If you let temptation get the better of you and start using it all the time, you will find that you are working to pay IT. Not a good thing.

Check out the site below. Lots of good financial advice.

Don't start credit. Don't get credit, don't give credit.
If you can't pay cash or they don't accept cash, don't do business.

Go to three banks and open a savings account at each. Leave $200 in each account.

Wait two weeks.

Go to each bank and request a $200 loan, secured by your savings account.

Open one checking account at one of the banks.

Pay the loan religiously, every month.

you'll have great credit.
