mynx326 | I'm seeking advice on spending addiction - SERIOUS answers only, please? |
I don't carry credit cards, but I have a bad habit of overspending my budget to the point that checks bounce and I wind up in a financial mess. I have even been suckered into those cash advance places.
I use shopping as a way to relieve stress. Yes, I am in therapy and this is an issue we discuss. Before you blast me for asking in this forum, I am looking for people who have been through this before! I have looked into Spenders Anonymous, but the nearest meeting site is a 2-hour drive away.
I budget, I do lists, I shop with cash only (when I have cash), and I even gave my parents my debit card so I can't go to the ATM. I can't get myself to stick to a budget.
If you have this problem, what are some of the things you do to help yourself? Additional Details My insurance covers my therapy. I don't pay any out-of-pocket.
I am in therapy for some other, more serious issues. |

Coutinue with counseling and maybe see your doctor about getting an anti-anxiety medication. make sure you are seeing a counselor who specalizes in addiction. Also, search the internet for resources or programs for people with shopping addictions. Also, try going to a local AA or NA meeting. They are everywhere. Probably more common that spenders annoymous. At least you would be able to meet with others who suffer from addiction. Addiction is addiction whether it is spending, drugs, alcohol, food. Best of luck. |

If you have made budget plans, lists, and shop with cash only have you ever just spent on one scheduled day to buy whatever you want!! You should first take care of any bills and needs before your shopping day so then you will only have a certain amount of money to spend on whatever you love to buy that you might not need. Plus maybe the idea of having only one time period per week or month or whatever you can show some resistance when your buying things you need by saying "NO, tomorrow is my shopping day". I don't know just a suggestion because I've always heard to be healthy you must practice moderation. |

Stay away from the mall and walmart. In fact, stay away from all stores. Get a friend to help you with your grocery shopping.
More importantly, how are you going to relieve that stress?
1st determine what is stressing you out. Is it that you are spending all your money? If it is, then problem solved.
If it's work, try getting a hobby. Learn to sew. Go to the park and feed the ducks. Anything [that's inexpensive] that takes your mind off your problems.
Buy an MP3 player and go for a bike ride, a jog, a walk. |

We must be sisters. I do the same thing. I put my mom in charge of my finances. She figures out my bills and gives me a spending budget. I am not allowed a checkbook and use money orders for everything. It's hard - but I am sooo bad with money and my mom is really good. Find a reliable friend or relative and put them in charge. I'm actually getting better at doing it myself. My biggest downfall is shopping online. I get bored at work and can't help myself. Good luck!!! |

Personally i don't have that addiction, but i am a serious about it. Do you have any friends to talk to to relive your stress? A boyfriend? Try whatever it takes. Only take enough money to buy the necessities whenever you're going to the mall. Control your self. Its your body and brain. Get a new hobby |

If you carry around cash, sometimes it is hard to keep track of what you spend. Try only carrying enough for gas, food, and emergencies (if you have a tire blowout or something and need a cab?) |

Sounds like you are on the right track to recovery.
I would also open a savings account, or 401k at work. Chanel your urge to spend to a positive one, an urge to save.
Try shopping at dollar stores for essentials, and eBay for cheaper items.
A lot of times people dress or drive to impress. Really though no one cares. I'd much rather be driving a car that's paid for rather than build anxiety about the huge payment I have to make.
Financial security is being able to deal effortlessly with an unexpected expense.
Get magazines on how to save money. Use grocery coupons. Print coupons off the internet. Buy clothes on holidays. There are tons of ways to save money find out what they are.
Your therapist is also taking your $. Do you really need to keep doing that? |

Well I don't have this problem myself, but Im not here to judge you. My advice would be to limit your trips to ANY store when it's absolutley necessary. Only carry the CASH you need to purchase the item(s) you NEED. Make a list and STICK to it. If you only carry enough cash for your list, that should help. If you think you still can't do that, ask your mom or someone else to do your shopping for you. Don't go shopping with friends just for the heck of it. Consider opening up a savings account that won't allow you to withdraw cash frequently. Only deposit necessary cash into your checking account.
Good luck, hope my advice helps. I know it's easier said than done, but give it a shot. |

Spending addiction = endless desire. It is your mind need to unwind - tendencies related to your childhood issues. Maybe got to do with your upbringing and social circles of friends. Seek to focus more on spiritual knowledge so that you shifted your focus from buying impulses to inner peace. Spending addiction also equal mind unrest. |
