I've got a "register for electors" letter but am not sure if I should register?
If I registered, would that mean that creditors could trace me back to my new adress?
Additional Details
I don't want any idiotic answer like "stephanie", just so they can get points for being useless and feel happy that there are people who are in financial trouble, because THAT is pathetic.

Yep - they sure can

Unfortunatly if you dont register you will not be able to vote. As for creditors yon dont have to give your previous address when you register to vote. if you apply for more credit and you moved within the last 3 years then you will be asked for your previous.

thesingist
hope this helps you decide,
my son didn't bother with the electoral register for several years, then when he decided to buy a house he had a great deal of difficulty getting a mortgage. so i would suggest registering, just think of your future and what you expect to be doing in a couple of years.

Assuming you're talking about the English electoral role there is a legal obligation upon householders, and that means the 'head of the house' resident at the time a register is being compiled to complete the returns of all people who are normally going to be resident on specific given date. In some circumstances confirmation of an existing entry can be done by phone by using a unique code on the letters sent out to households. Failure to complete a return is an offence. However when all the returns are collected in the electoral role is published in two versions. This is the important bit. The full entry is published and is available to limited categories of people, govt. depts. in elections by candidiates and political parties, and the use of the information is, allegedly, strictly controlled. A second 'edited' publicly available version is also published and people can elect not to have their details published in the general circulation versions. You have to say that you do not want your details in the 'edited' version when the forms are being completed in the first place. This 'edited' version is the version that commercial enterprises use for their marketing, tracing etc. I'm not suggesting that you should avoid debtors, only you know those circumstances and of course there are a host of ways you could be traced, and anyway what I've told you is information you would be entitled to if you had asked at your local town hall.

What with all the databases everywhere tracking everything from your address to your socks size, they can probably do that already.

You may be unable to get any credit at this new address unless you are on the register of electors. Also you will be unable to vote - and that means that you have no say on anything. Women died in this country to fight for the vote for women. (Ain't you watched Mary Poppins?) It's your right and your duty to register to vote and to use that vote in elections as your opinions are important and count.
What's more unless your debts were enormous I shouldn't think any company has the time or the staff to invest in tracking you down.
Sleep easy :0)

You need to register, if you dont some stroppy power crazy git will turn up at your door as thats what happened to me.

Yes they could but if you are running from creditors then I am not sure simply not registering on the elctors' register is a solution.

Visit www.moneysavingexpert.com for for detailed advice on dealing with debt and creditors. Or ring the national debt helpline
on 0808 808 4000 (UK only)

It could but if you have any mail at all going to your address they can track you down.

Very Sexy Vixen
Please fill that in hun as if you do not and you go to apply for a mortgage/loan your name will not show up on the voters roll and then you will always be asked to prove your address with utility bills and bank statements when applying for anything!!! Creditors will always find you hun. Try and sort everything out the more you hide the worse it will get. Try your best i know it will be hard! Good Luck for the future and wish you all the best! x

The data protection act means that agencies can not just pass information about you back and forth but if you register, unless you ask that your name does not appear on the electoral roll it could be found especially because of the web. However someone would probably have to have an idea of the area you lived in to find you. You should register and vote, women died to get the vote for you. You should also face upto your creditors and make arrangements to pay as otherwise you will never be truly free or at peace and will always be looking over your shoulder!

You have to. It's a legal requirement. And if you default on your payment to creditors you can be taken to court - avoiding your creditors is not the answer - it is easy to track people down these days. Register.

technically its illegal NOT to register, so you should but tick the box about not being on the public version.

eventually they will find you, through forwarding address you gave the electric, or how about your employer, who by now has had to tell the tax office, who will of course be linked to your old address by your NI number. and its all done on computers so they will find you even quicker.

hell even your car insurance & mot are on a national database now, so they can track you through that.

danl747
They can trace you whether you register or not so might as well register.

The idea of registering to vote is exactly that. If you do not register to vote you do not get a vote. If you register for a vote and do not use it (which equates to the same thing) then you have no right to complain about the way the country is run!

If you are only bothered about creditors finding you then what sort of mess are you in?
