I've never had a credit card. What's a good one to apply for with a low balance & low interest?
I'd like to keep it as simple as possible.

Small Bank...it is good place to start...large bank won't give you a good deal, they got too much business...

hello
Get one without an annual fee, and one where you can collect points or Air Miles. If you pay the credit card off in full each month, you will not be charged any interest. If you only pay the minimum payment then you will be charged the 18 - 28%/yr interest on the balance you owe. Paying it off in full each month is an excellent way to collect your points and improve your credit rating. Good credit allows you to finance a car when you want to buy one, and allows you to get a mortgage when you want a house.

I would go with a Visa or Mastercard that has little to no annual fee. Sometimes when you have never had a credit card it is hard to avoid the annual fee. Also be careful and read about the interest rate. Sometimes they can be tricky and start you with a really good low one and then they raise it sky high after a few months. My best advice, stay away from Discover cards. Good luck and welcome to the world of charging!

Hi eric_aixelsyd,
There are many great ones out there. I would reccomend taking a look at a couple and comparing the rates and the features to see what works best for you. Here is a great site to compare offers side by side.

Odds are, your first credit card will have an interest rate over 20%. I got my first credit card from Sears. Build up a little history, and then switch over to a different company. I am going to reccommend that you don't get any more than one card, and always pay it off at the end of the month if possible. Credit cards do make life easier, but they can be a trap also.

the best way to go about this is to apply for one at the bank you currently do business with....can't get much simpler..
