Discover deals with no one, or very few at all.

Oh your boss just called and said he has to many other bills this month so he is cutting your paycheck in half.....sorry!

You can't just negotiate your debt like that. They want their $8,000. You should pay what you owe, you spent the money, now it's time to py the bill, you either need to get a better paying job or a second job. You just need to throw all of your extra money at this debt, no more going out. Live on beans and rice, cut up the card and pay the debt.

Your credit card companies are not going to offer you settlements like 50%, for example, if you are current (not behind) on your payments. Basically, the only way you can get into a position to negotiate settlements is to deliberately let your accounts go into default. In essence, you have to ruin your credit to get into a position to negotiate any settlement.....Your credit card companies have no obligation to accept any settlement and it's perfectly within their right to refuse and to take you to court if you let your accounts go into default.

Contact your local Red Cross for a referral to the local Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS) in your area. They can negotiate much lower payments and interest rates. They DO NOT negotiate settlements.

They will require you to stop using all credit and to cut up your cards. Your credit report will be updated to "enrolled in debt management." This does not damage your credit, but it may make it impossible to obtain new credit while you are enrolled in their program....so don't use this service if you anticipate applying for a new apartment, car loan or mortgage anytime soon, as you would probably be denied while you're enrolled in the CCCS debt management program.... Otherwise, it can be a very good way to deal with your debt.
=============
STAY AWAY from any debt settlement firm you see advertised on TV or the internet.

First cut that card up and good luck with asking them if you could pay half I do not think it is going to happen but the best way to find out is by calling them and asking them anyway Good Luck

how's your credit score / history?
besides this Discover card how is your standing in general?

then minimum payment your making right now is burdensome, and the fact that you are losing hours at work puts you at a greater risk, and even if you did somehow continue making that big minimum payment in the future it's not worth it because your always payment a large some of money and most of it goes in interest.... i don't know how high your credit limit is on that credit card but whatever it is, your minimum is very high.

now if your credit perfect besides the fact that you owe $8000, if you try to settle your account for less, you'll ruin your score, i'd suggest working out a more realistic payment plan.

hope this helps.

God bless.

Good luck with negotiating with Discover... That credit card is notorius with NOT settling... You may be better off if you can get a personal loan from a credit union or bank or some other source to try a pay-off option of 6k- 7k.

We signed up with a credit card settlement company and everything was going quite well with our other credit cards 2. Discover simply won't settle and we are going to court. So, you can take your chances... We tried everything- we called them to see if we could lower the interest. We tried to settle with the settlement company and they won't work with anything.. So, we're going to go to court.

You might be able to call and make a 4k payment.. Maybe they will lower your interest rate and spread you other payments out but, it's highly unlikely.

Good luck and I hope it works out for you....

first off credit cards are awful ways to make credit...bc over all they end up putting you in debt one way or another...

you can call them and talk to them but i doubt they will allow this. you may have to pick up a second job

and the better way to look at things then keep using credit cards is if you dont have the money..IN CASH...then you DONT need it.

La Vie Boheme
Call them up and ask them what they can do for you as far as your APR. It never hurts to ask. I have called my credit card company twice in a year and had my rates lowered.

If you have been a very good customer, they just might do it. Discover lowered mine from 19% to 9.75%

There are people that deal with this professionally and will deal with the credit card companies.
