j0oh106 | I REALLY want to build great credit history and score? |
I just turned 18 about 2 months ago. I have a cell phone in my name which I had since I was 17. I applied for a credit card and was granted a $300 limit. I just received my second statement from that card. Should I apply for another card now or wait. I thought that I should wait until I pay my third statement to get another card.
-My credit limit will increase to $500 dollars when I pay my 3rd statement because I met three criteria.
-Use the card within 90 days.
-Pay at least the minimum payment on time.
-Don't go over the credit limit.
A great credit rating is very important to me and I don't want to jeopardize it. I really do appreciate the help which I am quite sure I will receive. Thanks a lot. Additional Details Yes Jabezlady, I do have a job. I am also a high school student also taking 6 college courses. When I do begin college next semester I will already have 20 credits. So I don't think the issue is me. I understand that I have an entire future ahead of me. However I also understand that simple steps taken now can pay off very well several years from now. I am incredibly financially responsible, so temptation and limits do not frighten me. Thank again for all of you help. |

Do you have a job? Although your credit rating is important you are very young so be careful not to abuse it. Also grow your credit slowly you have plenty of time. Focus on saving money, investing in your future. Pay off your balance monthly, it doesn't make any sense to pay them interest if you are just using it to establish credit. In addition if you pay yourself at least $50 a month and put it in a mutual fund by the time you are 43 you will have save over a million dollars. Focus on your future too, because when you are ready to buy your home in 5 to 10 years they will also ask how much do you have in investments, 401k's and stock. Don't get trapped, stay wise and grow your credit over time. You can also take a personal secured loan on your savings and pay it off and then go to another bank, open an account deposit your funds and ask for a secured personal loan. The key is open lines of credit which ultimately affect your credit score. Stay away from store credit cards. JL |

If you have never financed a purchase on credit previously, applying for a credit card can be a little tricky, as the issuer will have no record of yours to judge whether or not you are a credit risk or safe to lend to. As such, before you apply for any of the major credit card issuers, you’ll likely need to apply to either a minor credit card issuer, such as store, or apply for some form of hire purchase, such as a car loan or to buy a television. Once you have done this, it is then very important that you make the repayments timely and in full.
If applying for a store card or hire purchase loan doesn’t seem an acceptable way for you to create a good history of credit, an alternative you can consider is a secured credit card. Essentially a secured credit card requires you to maintain your credit card from a bank account and the limit of your credit will be a percentage of your account holdings. While not strictly a credit arrangement, the issuer then gets to see that you have the capabilities to repay the credit.
apply online for a best secured credit card at : http://www.credit-card-forums.com/Secured.html and build your credit score. |

Basic things to remember, Never miss a single payment, try to keep roughly between 50-100 dollars under your credit limit, try not to max out your card unless really need to, like an emergency. stay away from Dep. store cards, they often give a higher interest rate, dont apply to quickly and constantly for cards, everytime they run yoru credit check when applying you get points knocked off from your credit score. try to get one Visa or Mastercard (its accepted virtualy everywhere) and one Dep. Store of your choice... follow those steps, always pay on time and you should be good. Good luck and try to use your Credit card Very Carefully,.. Me personally im 19yrs old, i have 14 Credit Cards and owe 23thousand bucks.. so yeah BE CAREFULL!!! good luck |

Another idea to build credit is use department store credit cards e.g. Macy's, Dillards, or Nordstrom's. Just buy some nice things a couple times a year for a year or two then close out the card. The issue with being 18 and credit is the fact that underwriters will frown on the length of established credit. You can be 20 and have a 750 FICO and not get apporved because you have not established mature credit. |

The good idea would be to stay with one card.

You are an unusally smart 18 year old. I would not apply for a second card for a year. Don't give yourself any temptation. You can have your credit score go down for having too many cards as well. |

You're right credit is very important.
1. One card should be plenty. Potential lenders are wary if they believe an individual possesses more credit than they are able to afford should that individual decide to max out his cards.
2. More than one card doesn't equal a better credit score.
3. The only way to ensure good credit is to pay bills on time, ideally more than the set minimum amount. Length of credit is also an important factor so as you accumulate more months of positive credit you should see your score rise fairly quick. |

I agree with the others. I bet you that if you do these same things for the next 90 days, they will increase your limit to 1000 because you probably don't have any other debt. |

This is very smart of you to think to take your credit hisotry so seriously. Don't apply for another card right now, take time choosing the right one for you. A good thing will be to get a student credit card. They do not require much of a credit history and actually allow you to build one. Have a look at http://www.credit-card-authority.com/Student-Credit-Cards-814054-page.php
There are other things you can do to raise your credit score. You already have a job, that's good. Now you can open a saving account or a checking account to provide backing for your financial responsibility. And pay your bills, of course! |

As far as credit goes, your overall "credit score" is controlled by an internal agorithm and becomes really complicated to follow.
I'd suggest buying the Credit Secrets Bible ( http://tonydanza1.niesong.hop.clickbank.net/ ) it's pretty easy to follow, and does produce some results rather quickly if you follow all the tips.
I hope this helps. |

"Buiilding credit can be done in many ways. If you are disappointed at your loan application being turned down, it is mainly because of absence of credit history. You should learn how to do build your credit.
Do not buy unnecessary items. If you are looking to build credit start spending properly.
If you see any errors in your bills or credit, reports, contact the concerned persons immediately.
If you have purchased an item using your your credit card that later turned out to be defective or gave poor service, then you need not pay the charges. But you have to dispute the charges with the parties that were responsible for the act. If they do not replace the item or compensate you for a service or product, you are justified in refusing the payment." |
