Your best bet is to use the services of a debt counseling service that is recognized by the FTC. Here is a link to locate one in your area. These are legitimate and in some cases there are no fees.

Pick up a copy of "The Total Money Makeover".
Spend an evening reading it, and see if it can help. |
|

better than you
 |
Jeff is correct. The book helps. Besides if you go to a debt management compsny any future creditors will look at that like a bankruptcy. |

You have to be truly sick and tire of living the way your living to make it work. For us we got to that point.
Radio talk show host Dave Ramsey has a website, a portion of it has a fee associated for a supportive community.
We try to listen to him daily from 1-4 Central Time. Many AM radios carry him or you can stream him from his website on the internet. Google his name.
Financial Peace University and Total Money Makeover. All others lack the substance to stop the behaviors that get a person in the hole to begin with.
My recommendation is find the 13 week course in your area for FPU.
You can search for a class in your area by zip code

As far as how to?
My wife and I have been so-called working a program for about 5 years, we've knocked down a great deal of debt as the result, that said, we still did not control our expenses very well..
the 1st thing is get on a budget spend every dime on paper before you get paid. it will take a couple months to get it to work. Murphy happens.
This is the budget form we use:
http://www.daveramsey.com/media/pdf/fpu_qbudget.pdf
Follow the Baby Steps:
http://www.daveramsey.com/etc/cms/index.cfm?intContentID=2867
1. Start a $1000 Emergency Fund so you don't pull out the Credit Cards for an "EMERGENCY".
a. Have a Plastectomy (Cut up the cards)
AVOID CREDIT "CON"solidation things, this only delays the process of financial freedom.
Use the Debt snowball See form:
http://wealthcoach.daveramsey.com/media/pdf/Debt_Snowball.pdf
2. Pay off Debts using a Debt Snowball.
Get Current with minimum payments
then begin snowball
Smallest 1st to Largest.
When you do the budget extra money goes toward WHACKING the 1st debt, after it is paid off go on to the next, rolling payment from the 1st into the second. Depending on your income, $10000 could seem to be a mountain or a molehill. We knocked off 10 times that in 5 years and have 2 more years to pay off leaving the mortgage left after then
3. After you get your debt snowball complete, put 3-6 months of expenses into an emergency fund.
4. Invest 15% of your income in retirement
5. Set aside funding to kids college
6. Pay off home early
7. Build wealth and give. Invest in decent growth mutual funds over time, and real estate.
My 2 cents, Hope to see you on the FPU/TMMO forums. |

In my opinion, you should pay the debt, first. |

Seems like you need to own up to your mistakes. You need a written budget, stay on the budget and solve your problem. All these quick fixes and debt management companies are a joke.
[You can't pay your bills, so you're going to hire someone to pay your bills. And this makes sense?] |

Stay away from these companies.
What they do is not pay your creditors for months and then try and settle for less. No special skills. They just don't pay them.
Your creditors do not have to deal with them because it is your debt. Also, if they don't pay your creditors. You, and you alone are still responsible for the debt. Your creditors will sue you and not the company that you hire.
Save the fees they charge and do it yourself if that's the route you have to go. |

I have been using CareOne for nearly one year. They work with your creditors to reduce your interest rate and prevent any late fees. They don't jerk you around and they aren't a debt settlement program. They offer a lot of advice, and you can post and view forums. There are even drawings; answer a question each month or pay on time for three months.
EDIT:
Many creditors will think that debt consolidation is a STEP AWAY from bankruptcy, but not all think this and by law it isn't the same thing.
I understand that when you get into debt and still make the minimum payments, it seems as if you aren't making any headway. Or that you have so much debt that you can't even make the minimum payments. And that's why help is needed. Anyone who just automatically says that a debt management program is obsolete because you can make the payments on your own doesn't have a clue about the position you are in. |
