You cannot have a credit card because you have not yet reached the "age of ascent". In other words, you are not 18 years old and cannot legally enter into a contract.

The simple answer is that you can't. It is illegal to provide a minor with a credit account UNLESS you are placed as an authorized user on one of your parent's cards.

Some Credit Unions allow 16 year olds to get a 'secured' credit card. This means with a parent you put money in a savings account. You must keep this money as security in the account. Then you get a credit card for the amount usually $300.00
You need to do this for at least a year, but as you are responsible with your credit your limit will increase.

Don't get one! However you may be able to get a bank debit card if you have an account at the same bank. It may just be a debit card. It's probably the wisest choice for a 16 year old.
