For college students, there are plenty of credit cards vying for your business, hoping to get you hooked. The critical aspect to getting a credit card is this: PAY IT OFF EVERY MONTH IN FULL. Do not fall in the trap of making the minimum payment. Do not charge anything unless you already have the money in the bank to cover it. If you can find a credit card that offers you a cash rebate, even better, because using the credit card will pay you. Your goal with the credit card is to show you can use credit responsibly. Paying off the balance every month will do more for your credit rating than carrying a balance and making your payments on time. The only debt you should ever consider incurring (besides student loans, which you may not be able to avoid) is for a car payment (again, often unavoidable) or a mortgage when you purchase your first real estate. While responsible use of credit cards can enhance your credit rating, credit card debt only benefits the credit card company. |

I would suggest American Express. They've been good to me, and I've had them since college. The perks and rewards (cashback, flyer miles) are worth it.
However, I'd advise that whatever card you do get, don't spend more than $100 a month on it. Keep the amount low enough so you or your family can pay it off; but not to low that it's not even worth having. |

Be Careful with Credit Cards. TThey have a lot of hidden fees.
Like:
activation fee
additional card fee
late payment fee
apr rating
year to year fee
I recommend using your vehicle as a credit builder. |

Look for one with a low interest rate and one that gives you "Rewards". Lots of credit cards are giving rewards with their cards now; sometimes its a small annual fee but its usually worth it in the end, especially if you plan to carry a balance on your card. |

First make sure you do your research on interest rates and late fees and billing cycles. If this is your first card make sure you start with a very low limit to test yourself. $250.00 is a good limt. That's enough for a car rental, a hotel room or a modest dinner or toward your books. It's also a small enough amount that you could pay it off with a part time job. You always want to pay the full amount off if possible. If not then double the amount of the minimum due. If you're only paying the minimum amount it doesn't show that you're trying to repay the debt as well as paying the full amount or more than the minimum. Remember not to share the pin number with friends.. Your credit report is a character reference..some employers are actually looking at your report and car insurance companies use the data as well to determine premium rates. So use the card wisely.
I would suggest staying away from Capital One.. they have some nasty hidden fees and you may run into trouble trying to close the account. |

I'd recommend a MasterCard offered by General Motors. (GMCARD). You get 5% of everything you charge set aside for a new car purchase or lease, (up to $500 a year in savings). If you pay off the balance each month it's free money, even if you don't, you would be paying interest with someone. We have gotten a total of about $6,800 credited to 3 new cars since we have used our card. You can apply this money to any new GM product. Stop in and talk to the cashier or finance officer at any GM dealership. They should be able to provide you with an application Good Luck |

CapitalOne offers a service called creditinform, which sends out quarterly statements regarding your credit rating, such as how to improve it, etc. You can get this as an added feature on a capitalone card. But beware, you cannot ask for a credit increase with capital one, because they are a conservative lender. In addition, most of their cards carry membership fees. |

WELL YOU NEED TO BE SMART ABOUT IT MAKE SURE THE INTEREST RATE IS LOW.... GIVES THE MOST BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS.... HAVE GREAT OPTIONS LIKE PUTTING AWAY MONEY FROM EVERY CHARGE TO A RETIREMENT FUND ... DISCOUNTS ON TRAVELING FOR STUDENTS....ETC....REMEMBER WHEN YOU CAN NOT MAKE A PAYMENT FOR ANY REASON JUST MAKE ARRANGEMENTS WITH THE COMPANY... ALWAYS GET THE INSURANCE JUST IN CASE YOU LOOSE THE JOB YOU HAVE TO HELP PAY FOR THIS CREDIT CARD... GOOD LUCK OH ONE LAST PIECE OF ADVICE DO NOT ALLOW IT TO GET TO CLOSE TO THE LIMIT AND MAKING PAYMENTS ON TIME FOR AT LEAST 6 MONTHS YOU CAN GET AN INCREASE ON YOUR LIMIT BUT THEY MUST BE EITHER EARLY OR ON TIME |

Don't do it.
Get a credit card when you get a job. |

Whatever floats your boat. Discover provides CASH BACK on purchases... that's a good thing.
Your local Costco store can provide you with an American Express, that pays CASH BACK.
If your credit is turned down, you might borrow a small amount from a place like Household Finance, so that you can buy something that you need. This will establish a credit history. Just a couple hundred bucks of debt will make you happy. |

Try one co-offered by your college and the bank (or credit union). |

There is special category for student credit card go to your nearest bank and ask for student credit card, don't got for American express as it has higher rate. You might have lower limit but dont worry about it right now get it whatever they offer and after six months or so you can increase your limit |

I read over the answers you received so far and decided you need advise from someone with experience.
When applying for your first card, don't expect great interest rates. When choosing a card, fees are what you DON"T want. Interest Rates are immaterial If you plan to pay your balances off on time every month. HBCS Card Services offers an Orchard bank card with no fees. And paying off your balance will put you on the fast track to good credit.
I have had dealings with Capital One and HBCS. HBCS has a customer service department you can call when you need assistance. I cancelled my Capitol One card only six months after opening the account. |

i think you should look into getting a debit card. you will probably be more careful about how you spend your money since it's just like writing a check. but if you want to get a credit card, you should get one of those cards from differnet places. like when you spend so much you get rewards according to which credit card you have. like if you get one for an airline, you would get miles or rewards or something. |

capital one seems pretty decent. that was the first credit card i got in college. |

First, why do you need a credit card..... college students (myself included) generally live on a very limited budget.... you are almost asking for trouble, even if it is just for "emergencies" you'll be surprised what you are able to justify to yourself as an emergency. If you feel a credit card is the only ay to build credit (it is NOT) go for a store card like target were you purchase items anyway, they will give you a very low limit but you can "build credit". Don't become another college graduate with $4800 in credit card debt. |

A good start would be to apply for a credit card where you bank at. If you are in good standing with such bank you will get the lowest interest rate. My advice is to shop around for the lowest interest rate. I am a member of a credit union and they have great services and I can get the lowest interest rate on my credit cards. |
